Frida Kahlo Khadija Shirwa

Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 an died July 13, 1954. Her work was mainly from 1930s through 1950s. She was born in Coyoacan, Mexico. When she was six years old she got polio and her right foot was deformed because of it. She got into an accident and disabled her. This ruined her dreams of wanting to become a doctor. Instead she began painting.

She got married to Diego Rivera. He encouraged her art work. They had a rocky relationship. He was had an affair with her sister and she had an affair with someone else. They even got divorced and remarried.

Frida Kahlo is well known for her self portraits. She told her stories and represented her hardships through her paintings. She represented how she was paralyzed and how she got miscarriages. She painted a picture of two Frida's sitting next to each other one represented the "loved" and one represented the "unloved" forms of her self. This was during the time when she and her husband were divorced.

Her art work was influenced by the traumatic events she went through during her life time. Such events include when she got polio when she was six, the accident when she became disabled for life. Her art work in mainly surrealism and tragic. She traveled the world and exhibited her art work in many places. She sold many paintings and inspired many people.
