From LA to LA

NLPS Graduate Cam Whitcomb, heads from Learning Alternatives to Los Angeles to become one of the contestants on American Idol. Cam made it into the top 20 by impressing the judges and audience with his talent - his personality and back flips may have helped too! Cam developed his musical talents in the district's Learning Alternatives recording studio.

At the Special Board of Education Meeting on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, the Board approved the motion to rename Coal Tyee Elementary to “syuẁén'ct" and approved the naming of the NDSS Community Field to “q’unq’inuqwstuxw.” Below you will find two videos which share the pronunciation of the names.

The Board recommended that staff have the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan available to the public for consultation immediately, with the plan to report back in September with public feedback. The Board recommended staff write a letter of support for the City of Nanaimo's bid to host the 2025 or 2026 BC 55+ games. View the entire agenda here.

Consultation

The Board has begun a consultation period on the DRAFT Environmental Stewardship Action Plan.

The Environmental Stewardship Action Plan (ESAP) will operationalize the Board’s Strategic goal of being a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainability and will impact all areas of the district from teaching and learning to reconciliation to infrastructure.

Please take a moment to read through the plan. Feedback will be welcome until August 31, 2022 via email consultation@sd68.bc.ca

DAC Closure

The District Administration Centre will be closed from Wednesday, July 13 until Friday, August 19, reopening on Monday, August 22. Any payroll concerns should be directed to payroll@sd68.bc.ca.

The Facilities and Maintenance Departments will be open during the summer, except for statutory holidays.
