Lowellites and the Closed Campus Policy by Maren Brooks

Lowell's controversial new closed campus policy has caused a stir among the student population. While the Lowell administration considers it a safety necessity, many Lowellites take issue with the policy and the way it has been enforced. This feature examines how the closed campus policy has been received overall by Lowellites, and showcases a few student perspectives on the debate.

Data from a random sample of 337 students who responded to a survey conducted by The Lowell in April 2023.

How students feel about the closed campus policy, in their own words

"Punishing everyone for the actions of a few is unfair. The closed campus policy has caused people who used to go to Stonestown to eat lunch to line up at the cafeteria. The cafeteria’s line was already super long, now it is so long some students don’t have time to eat their lunch when they finally get it."
"Attempting to shut down a massive campus with 3,000+ people streaming in and out at all times is a half baked poorly implemented idea. Maybe if we were a small private school of 200 it would be possible but this place has too many entrances, exits, and people to effectively close the campus."
"As a second semester senior, leaving campus for lunch is important for me to take a quick break from school. It is a necessary part of my day where I am able to reset. I think that it is a bad use of security’s time and there are so many other things that require more administrative attention (like the school bathrooms)."
