War in the Pool In the heart of the Ninja stronghold

Photographs by Matthieu Alexandre

Loulombo, Pool, Congo, 2005

The Pool war is an internal conflict between the Republic of Congo and the Ninja militia of the Pool department from 1998 to 2005, which resurfaced from 4 April 2016 to 23 December 2017. In April 2007, Pastor Ntumi signed an agreement with the government: he became deputy minister, in exchange for which the 5,000 fighters of his militia would be disarmed.

I followed the team of an NGO that helps the inhabitants and the former Ninja fighters.

Loulombo is in the heart of the Pool, a region that is very difficult to access.
The Ninjas have established their camp there.
The railroad that connects the coast to the capital crosses the village.
The train passes once a week.
An NGO takes advantage of the train to deliver building materials to the villagers.
An NGO organizes a distribution of basic necessities to the villagers.
The wall inscription reads "Peace in the world".
