Asyndeton & PolySYNdeton Two forms of writing conjunction in non-standard ways.

ASYNDETON AND POLYSYNDETON BOTH ADD STYLISTIC FORCE TO WRITING BUT HAVE DIFFERENT USES OF CONJUNCTIONS.

ASYNDETON is one of the most expressive rhetorical devices to use.

It adds flair to a sentence by leaving out conjunctions in a list between clauses.

When there are only two clauses, using an asyndeton will define the second clause as a clarification of the first

In a list of more than two clauses, asyndeton can give the impression that the list you created was spontaneous rather than structured traditionally and has a faster pace rather than a long, dragged out list.

Using an asyndeton to list items or ideas also may imply to the reader that the list isn't finished, leaving them to come up with additional items to add.

POLYSYNDENTON is the stylistic opposite of asyndeton

"Polyimplies that there is more than one conjunction being used.

The reoccurring use of "and" in this rhetoric device adds urgency and power, forming a hypnotic rhythm.

Ex. "The runner past the ten-mile mark and the fifteen and the twenty, and the finish line loomed infront of him."

Although the conjunctions being used become punctuated beats, the punctuation itself is determined by the writer.

As seen in this example, there is consistent use of both commas and conjunctions, forming a powerful, yet structured sentence.

POLYSYNDENTON is also an effective way to give a list of important attributes or ideas with immediate force.

Ex. "The banquet table was a riot of beef and pork and lamb and fish and fresh vegetables and candied fruits and all sorts of wonderful dainties."

Overall,

ASYNDETON and POLYSYNDETON are both powerful, creative, rare, stylish, non-standard...

BUT

Are only effective if used sparingly and correctly and at the right moments.

(And not in the same sentence, like me) 😅
