Simulation and integrative learning @ UIc A Quarterly Update - Fall 2021

Hello From SAIL,

We hope this finds you well. As we are all adjusting to our new “normal,” we want to express our sincerest gratitude for your continued flexibility and professionalism. No matter what is thrown at us, y’all keep us ‘SAIL-ing” along! THANK YOU!

SAIL is dedicated to remaining a leader in simulation innovation. This new academic year, we are exploring many new initiatives. One new, unique offering will give learners more opportunities to “choose their own adventures” in their simulation experiences. SAIL also continues to be dedicated to a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion dialogue. We are exploring how simulation can be used as a tool to facilitate these often difficult, but crucial conversations. We are also looking to expand the type of patient scenarios we provide to better reflect the diversity of the patient populations we portray.

And finally, SAIL has released its own podcast series, “BS- Beyond Simulation.” Each month, this unique program offers a glimpse into some of the most influential simulation professionals’ lives and what really makes them tick: Why did they get into simulation? What passions and interests from their outside world fuel their simulation creations? How do they see simulation helping to heal the world? Make sure to check it out on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!

Have a safe and abundant fall!

TECHNOLOGY-BASED SIMULATION (TBS)

Welcome these new clients this summer:

UIH Resuscitation Workshop

This is an exciting new collaboration between SAIL and UI Health. Main learning objectives focus on standardizing protocol, maintaining and improving healthcare quality, and interprofessional education. It’s been a dream come true having internal medicine residents and nurses working side-by-side in simulation. SAIL looks forward to future programs with the resuscitation team.

GME – ICU Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, and Allergy (PCCSA) Airway Workshop

This program addresses the PCCSA Fellows’ abilities to assess a patient in respiratory distress and recognize early intubation. The Fellows get 1-hr of airway skills training from their Attendings followed by two manikin-based scenarios. During COVID, faculty developed a “pre-intubation” checklist that was implemented in the ICU. This is one of few manikin-based simulation programs that utilizes a checklist to assess knowledge gaps and acknowledge errors.

New Equipment

SAIL recently purchased a Raise 3D Printer! There is no limit to the usefulness of a 3D printer in simulation. Presently, our goal is print an assortment of molds for a variety of skin creations and syringe caps. The TBS team is working with tech-savvy individuals to explore all the possibilities, and soon we will be printing supplies, useful attachments and pieces for procedural task trainers at a fraction of the cost.

Human Based Simulation (HBS)

It’s back to school! We continue to work both remotely and in person. Currently, the majority of programming after September 30 will be in person. Please keep in mind that this semester is unlike any other as we are trying to play catch-up with the M2s and some of the projects have been rearranged for the M1s.

We just had a round of auditions and hope to be welcoming a handful of awesome new folks to the SAIL team any day now!

SAIL is excited for a couple of new projects:

• Choose Your Own Adventure - This is a new M3 project that enables learners more voice in their simulation encounters. At the start, learners choose the level of communication difficulty they would like to experience. Then, during the encounter, learners and SPs can start and stop anytime, rewind and re-do moments, and strategize choices for learners to try. One might think of it as “scene study” for medical education.

Almost Home Kids is a short-term community based pediatric healthcare facility that brings together Medical Professionals, Recreational Volunteers, Community Providers, Sponsors, Donors, Friends, Corporate and Civic Partners. SAIL will be providing simulation opportunities for their professional development programs. Simulations will provide learners practice on their clinical skills as well as conflict resolution skills.

CORONAVIRUS SAFETY AT SAIL

UIC COVID POLICY

This is an edited version of the UIC COVID POLICY, to find the full version, please go to: EMPLOYEE COVID-19 VACCINATION POLICY

The University of Illinois System requires that all employees (faculty and staff) be fully vaccinated for the Fall 2021 semester, no later than October 1, 2022. This policy details the University of Illinois Chicago’s expectations for adhering to this requirement including disclosure requirements.

Upon disclosing that the employee is fully vaccinated (at least 14 days later than your final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine), they will not be required to participate in regular on-campus saliva testing or to submit the daily UIC Healthcheck COVID-19 Self- Monitoring Survey prior to coming to campus. The employee’s UIC Daily Pass will remain “green” with the word “exempt” across the dual badges. An email with instructions on how to submit proof of vaccination will be sent to the employee following disclosure.

Minority Impact Statement: To the extent appropriate and practical, UIC will work with individual employees who qualify for an exemption to identify a path forward to continue to meet their work responsibilities. Those that do not document vaccination status or receive an exemption will be subject to disciplinary action.

Failure to comply to the vaccination policy may subject employees to progressive discipline.

If you have any questions, please contact jcola@uic.edu before arriving at SAIL.

When you arrive at SAIL, you will be asked to show the status of your screenings on your phone to a SAIL staff member. (If your status is “yellow” or “red” in either the saliva testing or UIC Healthcheck, you will be allowed to participate in your project at the center, but asked to complete the requirements asap.)

If you have any questions, please email jcola@uic.edu or your project coordinator before arriving at SAIL.

Let's keep looking forward toward the horizon for bright skies and steady waters!
