On few days does the professionalism of our educators shine as brightly as the first day of school.

They are nurturing new friendships, and pivoting effortlessly between wiping away tears of separation and sharing in the joy of being reunited.

They know every child's name before they walk in the door, and they're ready to learn about each child's loves and challenges and gifts so they can teach them in exactly the way they need, and meet them exactly where they are.

Maybe some parents and students had a little trepidation this week. Transitions aren't always easy.

But they could rest easy knowing our educators and staff — from our bus drivers to our custodians to our cafeteria workers to our classroom teachers — have got this, and they've got it with professionalism and skill and heart. It's going to be a great year.

NHCS Annual Report 2022

We are excited to announce the publication of our 2022 Annual Report, a 36-page magazine showcasing our favorite stories, photographs, staff and student highlights, and important data points from the last year.

The Annual Report will be on the front page of our website and print editions will be available throughout our schools and the community. Thank you for sharing in the good work we do!

'All Hands on Deck' Unites Community and Schools

New Hanover County Schools could never achieve its mission without the strong support of our community partnerships, volunteers and mentors.

If you know people or organizations who are interested in contributing to the work we're doing, send them to our All Hands on Deck webpage for information about volunteering, donating or forming a partnership with NHCS. You can also check out past issues of our Best of NHCS newsletter, which highlights partnerships throughout the district.

Pre-K Team Welcomes New School Year

Communications Team Shares Back to School Memories

"I remember starting 5th grade (or so) excited that I was the tallest kid in the class. Turned out to be the first, last, and only time in my life this was the case." - Josh Smith
"A fresh new start to begin again without the weight of the previous school year, with no judgment from previous behavior." - Caress Clegg
"I loved going shopping for new clothes and getting everything fresh and new for the start of school." - Russell Clark
"One year my mom took me back-to-school shopping in Minneapolis and I got to wear a BUM Equipment outfit — head to toe, including matching tote bag — to my first day of sixth grade in North Dakota. That was when I peaked in coolness and it's been all downhill since." -Christina Beam
"Showing off my fresh new outfit." - Caleb Price
"As a band geek, getting back to school was exciting because that meant playing and performing music with my friends and creating stronger bonds. I didn't know it at the time but it challenged me, gave me wonderful friendships and strengthened my love for music and performance." - Kevin Hubbard
"I've created my own back to school tradition with my boys. On birthdays, holidays, and the first day of school, we start the day with eggs benedict." - Anita Baggie
"One of my main memories of First Day Back to School is when I started the 1st Grade I was too scared to go in the class so I spent the first 10 minutes out in the hallway." - Chase Fulton
