Five Bucket-List Destinations with Orbridge That Will Float Your Boat

From casual ships to upscale expedition vessels, graceful riverboats, and others in between, there’s been big growth in the small-ship cruise sector as guests seek travel authenticity in bucket-list destinations.

Coveted small-ship destinations often involve spectacular landscapes or wildlife. Orbridge's small-ship voyages are the most personal and in-depth way to experience these extraordinary places because of flexible itineraries, ease of navigation with greater access, and immersive activities among a small group.

Join us as we take a closer look with members of our staff at five of our programs that feature cruising for unique insight into frequently asked questions.

1. Alaska

The Chichagof Dream in Alaska

Question: How does the Chichagof Dream complement Orbridge's Alaska program?

Answer: The small-ship experience is the only way to experience true Alaska. While the larger ships just pass by with their travelers trying to spot wildlife and scenery through the lens of binoculars, this tour takes place on an intimate 76-guest vessel that is built for this specific destination. You will get to hug the coastline while giving the wildlife their space, traverse deep into fjords, and pull up dockside to different ports along the way. Kayaking and zodiac rides are offered at no additional charge and take place directly from the ship, so in a moment you become one with the vast landscape and seascape of Alaska.

Question: What is the food onboard like?

Answer: Prepare to be delighted by the food! With dedicated kitchen staff members focusing on different cuisine, there are always multiple options to choose from at each meal while you enjoy the included beer and wine over conversation with your fellow tour guests.

Question: What are some of the other included amenities?

Answer: The ship offers complimentary expedition gear while touring, including rain jackets, rain pants, and boots. There's also a Himalayan salt cave onboard for relaxation.

Question: Any advice to someone considering this program based on your experience and insider's knowledge?

Answer: This is truly the only way to experience Alaska if you want to see wildlife and the stunning scenery through your own eyes from the comfort of your cabin, the lounge space, or the expansive outdoor viewing decks. Your team of on-board naturalists lead many excursions each day and at the first sight of wildlife, they provide in-depth and informative commentary that bring your experience to life.

2. Southern France

The Amadeus Provence

Question: How does the Amadeus Provence complement Orbridge's Passions & Pursuits: Golfing in Southern France program?

Answer: The Provence is incredibly luxurious, yet still intimate, with a lovely top deck for sunbathing and enjoying cocktails and a beautiful infinity pool. The ride along the river is smooth and quiet and watching the French villages come and go past your window is lovely. I enjoyed waking up to the swans floating along the water in the morning.

Question: What is the food onboard like?

Answer: The dining is absolutely over the top, as it should be in France, right? Breakfasts are lovely buffets with fresh fruit, croissants, and pastries. Lunches are often served casually in the lounge with pastas, salads, and incredible French sweets. Dinners are served most elegantly in the dining room at assigned tables with many excellent meat, fish, and vegetarian options. There are many courses and so much wine. Decadent desserts, chocolates, and cheeses are served every night.

Question: Sounds ritzy! Is there any dress code? What should I pack to wear? Are laundry services available?

Answer: There isn't any particular dress code, but guests usually dress up a bit for dinner. No tuxedos or suits are necessary, however. Guests should bring a mix of casual walking clothes and slightly dressy dining wear. Yes, you can have laundry done for you on the ship.

Question: How do I know this program is right for me? Who is the tour really geared towards?

Answer: If you are interested in luxurious travel, incredible food, and the freedom of unpacking once rather than over and over on a trip, then this is perfect. It's a wonderful taste of the French countryside.

3. Antarctica

The Ocean Victory in Antarctica

Question: How does the Ocean Victory complement our adventure in Antarctica?

Answer: The Ocean Victory couldn't be more perfect for seeing the "Great White Continent." She's a great blend of luxury and expeditionary styles. Holding under 200 guests, she's also a terrific size. Only 100 guests can do landings on Antarctica at one time due to IATTO regulations, so size does matter. Serving our guests is one of the best crews in the business. They are a staff from around the world. In total, we had 27 countries represented on the ship when I was there.

Question: What is the food onboard like?

Answer: There are delicious meals served daily. Accommodations can be made to meet dietary needs. We gather that information in advance. Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner, and there's a special tea with snacks in the afternoon for a treat. It's such a pleasure meeting new friends and talking about the day's adventures. There isn't any stuffy or formal dress code on the ship. Dress for warmth, comfort, and bring closed-toes shoes.

Question: Will there be a "muster drill?" And I understand this sensitivity varies from person to person, but in general, should I prepare for the possibility of seasickness?

Answer: First, absolutely there is a safety drill. That is paramount. Second, crossing the Drake Passage is a rite of passage. This is the confluence of three Oceans—the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern ones. It's been estimated that up to 50% of the people on any given voyage across the Drake will feel some degree of seasickness. Prepare in advance of your trip by speaking with your physician. He or she can make the best recommendations for your personal health needs in addition to common practices including taking ginger and light meals, avoiding alcohol, getting plenty of sleep, and fixing your eyes on the horizon. This is a common question we are asked. I've found on my Antarctica trips that travelers overall take any queasiness as part of the adventure, and they often commiserate together. While the ship is small enough to provide the ability to maneuver narrow channels and access bays that are closed to bigger vessels, it is also well-designed with guests' comfort and safety in mind. It uses Rolls-Royce zero speed stabilizers and a patented X-Bow for a more comfortable and stable voyage.

Question: How do I know this program is right for me? Who is the tour really geared towards?

Answer: This is an amazing trip for the seasoned, bucket-list traveler. You'll swap tales of journeys from around the world with others and share what brought you to this coldest, windiest, and driest continent. There's no place like it! Many people love the thrill and sense of accomplishment of joining the amazing history of exploration here and checking it off the list. I encourage interested guests to check out our amazing pre- and post-tour options as well. Buenos Aires and Iguazú Falls aren't to be missed!

4. The Galapagos Islands

The Isabela II in the Galapagos Islands

Question: How does the Isabela II complement our Galapagos itineraries?

Answer: The Isabela II combines modern luxury with an up-close and personal experience of the Galapagos islands. The ship hops from island to island each night and drops anchor in a new, beautiful, remote location each morning. With a 40-guest maximum, passengers can enjoy peace and quiet while sipping their wine on the sundeck and watching the sunset. As a smaller vessel, it's easy to navigate the ship and enjoy its amenities while still traveling in comfort and style. A smaller group also makes it possible to get to know the amazing guides and really complements the educational atmosphere.

Question: What is the food onboard like? Does the Isabella II have any dress code we should know about?

Answer: The food is delicious and plentiful, with fresh buffets in the morning containing many fruits and vegetables. Guests with a wide range of dietary needs can be accommodated, including any vegans and gluten-free amongst the group. Guests are free to mix and mingle and dine with others as they please as there aren't pre-determined seating arrangements. There's also no dress code. It is very casual and comfortable.

Question: What do you recommend guests pack for on this cruise?

Answer: While on excursions, I recommend good, comfortable hiking clothes. Also, don't forget plenty of reef safe sunscreen and a good hat that will stay on. Galapagos is close to the equator, and the sun is very strong.

Question: How do I know this program is right for me? Who is the tour really geared towards?

Answer: If you are active, and are interested in biology and wildlife, this is an excellent tour for you. It's unlike anything else you'll experience.

5. Egypt

A Nile cruise aboard a dahabiya offers the romance of the past with modern comfort and convenience.

Question: How does a dahabiya, or traditional Egyptian houseboat, complement our tours in Egypt?

Answer: While in Egypt, a true highlight is the private dahabiya while cruising the Nile River. With only 14 other guests onboard, guests get to enjoy an authentic and immersive experience—ranging from enjoying dinner with local residents along the banks of the Nile, to being able to pull right up to the ancient antiquities visited. This home-away-from-home will be one of the most memorable aspects of your Egypt travels.

Question: Is there wi-fi access on board? How can I stay in touch with my family and friends back home? Will my cell phone work?

Answer: While on tour, time is spent at various luxury hotels in addition to the time on the private dahabiya. The hotels all have wi-fi access to stay connected, but while on board the boat you can expect to enjoy being disconnected and having the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Question: What is the food like for our guests in Egypt?

Answer: Guests will be well-satiated throughout this expedition. The food is fresh, abundant, and varied. Enjoy local fruit and vegetables, grilled meats, delectable desserts, and the tried-and-true hummus, baba ganoush, and falafel.

Question: Where do guests like to hang out on the dahabiya to relax? What would you say was your favorite moment onboard?

Answer: There are indoor air-conditioned lounge spaces, but the majority of guests enjoy spending time relaxing on the sundeck that expands over the full top deck. There are shaded areas, comfortable lounge furniture, and access to refreshments that you can enjoy while taking in the scenery and connecting with fellow guests and your resident Egyptologists who will be with you for the full tour.

As for a favorite moment? Watching the setting sun. It is unlike anything else. On the Nile River, something so ordinary becomes exquisite. As you meander the calm Nile in the evening, the setting sun paints the landscape in such rich and unforgettable colors.
