Update | April 2023
Welcome to our fourth Institute Update April 2023! We are focussing this time on our latest achievements of EU projects and the launch of our first capacity-building session on Urban Governance together with ThinkCity Institute. We are currently preparing our involvement in our next research projects PLUSChange and Down2Earth, but also welcoming our new staff member Alice Jelmini, who is starting next week at the Institute.
Institute Activities
+CityxChange
+CityxChange recently held a Learning Session in Follower City, Sestao, Spain. As the project comes to a close, we are holding these Learning Sessions as an opportunity to understand the key takeaways from the project, including challenges and opportunities for growth. By visiting the different Cities, we not only gain a better understanding of how the project has been implemented in each location but are also able to extract tangible insights related to climate neutrality and project implementation that are of value beyond the scope of our project. See our recent news post about the event!
VARCITIES
The implementation of the VARCITIES' Visionary Solutions in its seven Pilots is going full speed, with pilots now deploying specific sensors to monitor an array of variables linked with citizens' health and well-being. Want to know more? Why don't you subscribe to our newsletter!
JUSTNature
How can we combine technology in the implementation of Nature-base solutions? Check out images from the tree heritage survey by LIDAR laser-scan technology applied in Merano, our City Practice Lab. The result looks very impressive, and you can watch the video for more details, in which Dr Anni Schwarz, the tree expert and director of Merano's city gardening, explains the LIDAR technology and how the city will use this method to benefit its Nature-based solutions.
UP2030
UP2030 has launched its official website! Check it out to learn more about the project and get acquainted with the participating cities. And be sure to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter for the latest updates.
DUST
The DUST website is now live! Keep up to date with the main updates from the project as we get started and dive into the project, exploring methods to amplify the voices of least-engaged communities in sustainability transitions.

DOWN-TO-EARTH
During the second week of April, Down-to-Earth partners met online to soft launch the project and start planning the first year's activities. We will work on the environmental risks related to depopulation and the ageing population in rural areas, identifying best practices and win-win solutions in the 8 partner regions and beyond. Soon, the communication channels will be launched too. Stay tuned for future updates, and look forward to new policy research on how to make rural areas sustainable, resilient and attractive!
Institute Academy
WAVE
The Erasmus project WAVE, which addresses the issue of sustainable development of water areas in urban and peri-urban areas through interdisciplinary training, is organising its final event in Nurtingen as part of the Landscape Forum. Follow this link to discover more about the event!
At the Isocarp Institute, we are constantly looking for new ways to reach those beyond the scope of academia and platform the voices of those less heard in society. One way in which we do this is through societal events and workshops where we connect policymakers, researchers and members of diverse communities through storytelling. In doing so, we enable effective citizen participation, facilitate co-creative ideation, and align solutions with the communities they affect. If you need help with citizen outreach and communication and want to learn more about our storytelling work, don't hesitate to contact us!
🤝CONNECT WITH INSTITUTE
Opportunities for new partners! We are looking for new partners with whom we can work together on capacity building, research exploration, public outreach and technical assistance both in and outside of Europe. We are always open to new connections, reach out to us via email: info@isocarp-institute.org or connect on social media
