INTRODUCTION

I have always been an avid gamer ever since I could remember back when I would play Super Nintendo as a kid. I got into fighting games more recently with games like Street Fighter 4 and Mortal Kombat X to start and now I own more fighting games than I have a right to on account that I am not very good. I’ve tried to get better at these games with studying frame data and practicing combos, but I never could get the hang of it to be as a good as a professional was. I always wanted something to show me ways to improve and thought up the idea of Frames using AR technology to do this very task.

PRODUCT PROTOTYPE

Frames AR glasses have a goggle design to better suit people who already wear glasses and a single lens that is more comfortable for people who don't normally wear glasses.

WHY FIGHTING GAMES?

PERSONAS

Competitive

“I always strive to be the best at anything I do, and that goes for when I play video games too. My friends never want to play fighting games with me because I am a little too competitive, but I can’t get into playing online because I am not that good against others who play more.”

Semi-Professional

“I started streaming playing video games as a means to share my progress in how I play, but it quickly grew into something more and now I can actually make a living streaming. I’ve also gotten pretty good at fighting games enough to maybe participate in some tournaments, but I don’t feel confident in my skill level yet at these games and wish to get better at them first.”

COMPETITION

AR glasses brands like Google Glass (or just Glass) and Nreal have products similar to Frames, but don’t garner a specific audience and aren’t made for the purposes that Frames serve in getting better at fighting games.

Brands like Razer and Corsair offer products in a simialr field of gaming peripheral, but don’t consist of AR technology or anything that is used to train gamers at fighting games. (more so could be possible partners)

VISUAL STRATEGY

Color Palette

The core elements used for the branding of Frames was to utilize the colors and shapes found when viewing frame data and hitboxes while using Frames. Hitboxes are usually overlapping boxes of warm colors like red and yellow, which indiciate the areas where a fighter’s moves will register and make contact with the other fighter’s own hitboxes. Cool colored outlined boxes using blue or green also indicate hitboxes and help in understanding frame data of most moves and special abilites in fighting games. with these colors being the main identity of Frames, a dark grey is used instead of basic black and a lighter grey is used for embellishment in various media and branding. White is used mainly for text, but can also be substitue for background or embellishment.

Typekit

Como, a modern rounded sans-serfi typeface, was used for the logo font and subsequently for the heading/display font too. Como’s solid round shapes to the letterforms and wide capitalized letters worked well as a display font for easy to read headings and worked wonders for the logo with the logomark together.

Montserrat, a geometric sans-serif typeface, was original used as the display font, but was favored for the body copy instead because of its easy readability at small font sizes and wonderful balance of both sharp lines and round edges between capitalized and lowercase letterforms.

MARKETING / ADVERTISING

The way Frames will be marketed will primarly be through Twitch streamers either through promotional collaborations with specific fighting game influencers or e-sports (electronic sports) related streams with sponsorship in mind. Word of mouth through social media and sites like Twitch and Youtube will help get the brand name out there and have consumers who are interested in fighting games show interest, especially if an influencer or professional fighting game player recommends Frames to their own audiences.
