'STILL HERE' by Dave and the Daves

A Depression Comedy

Promoting mental health through laughter, song and storytelling, STILL HERE is a new musical theatre show full of honesty and heart.

Dave Houston worked with our Year 11 Drama students last year for 3 terms helping devise and direct the show RISING. The production was very well received in the community, and now Dave is coming back to BBHS for one morning to perform his one man show ‘Still here by Dave and the Daves’ on Friday 10 March at 9am.

Dave is an actor, musician and theatre director. In his solo show Dave weaves multiple characters, elements of clown and stand-up comedy, live songs and vulnerable storytelling about depression, loss, suicide, recovery and love. The show incorporates live music, including original songs in genres from rock and psyche-folk, to punk, hip-hop and even a sweet lullaby.

‘Part slapstick, part stand up, part brutal honesty about living with depression, with cracking original songs. A moving and relatable piece of theatre about mental health.’ Samantha Rennie - National Loss & Grief Educator - Tobin Brothers Funerals

All Drama students from Year 10 – 12 are invited to see the show and permission notes have been emailed out to families this week. The cost is $15 per student and includes a post-show Q&A. A staff representative from the Byron Bay High School Wellbeing team will be present during the show as a support for students.

Year 12 Society and Culture Personal Interest Projects

Students across the two Year 12 Society and Culture classes spent time working in collaboration to share ideas for their Personal Interest Projects (PIP). The projects are considered a ‘major work’ and contribute 40% to their overall HSC mark.

During the workshop, students presented their project title, hypotheses and research methodologies, as well as giving some insight into their topic and reasons for their choice.

With topics covering; cancel culture, gender representation in sport, contemporary Indigenous identity, perceptions of Asian women in society, social fascination in True Crime/Psychopath media, as well as the role and function of juvenile detention. They received feedback from one another about how to improve their work as well as what else they could consider from an ‘outsiders’ perspective to make their work socially and culturally relevant.

Once again, the cohort of students demonstrated great insight to present thorough and knowledgeable breakdowns of their PIPs so far. Over the coming weeks, students will be sending out their primary research questionnaires, so look out for those and your opportunity to contribute to these bodies of work.

NESA HSC Minimum Standard online tests

BBHS students will have their first opportunity to practice and complete the HSC Minimum Standard tests during Weeks 5 - 8 of Term 1. Tests will be conducted during Preparing for Success classes and are required by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for the award of the HSC. The online tests assess reading, writing and numeracy skills and have a dual purpose as evidence of skill level for school leavers.
