The Relationship Between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson Created by haYley

#1 - Always together

During the film and as we read the novel, we never see Holmes and Watson not together. They are always a pair and even though they go through rough stages during both versions they are inseparable.

#2 - Sherlock is always the leader

Sherlock is naturally a leader between the two. In both versions Sherlock comes up with amazing ideas and we see Watson following them.

#3 - Both Intelligant

In both versions it may seem that since Sherlock comes up with ideas he is the more Intelligant one between the two, but ultimately they are just as Intelligant as each other. We portray Watson examining and rejecting Sherlocks ideas, pointing out that they are either stupid or impossible.

#4 - Equality

In the BBC adaptation and original novel there is a noticeable difference in the equality between the two protagonists. In the book Sherlock acts as like he is more important than Watson, whereas in the BBC version Watson stands up for himself.

#5 - Points of address

In the 2012 BBC version, we see Sherlock and Watson addressing each other by their first names. In the 1902 original text, we see see them addressing each other by their last names.

#6 - Language Structure

The time difference between the two versions is why the language structure is different between the two versions.

#7 - Watsons relationship towards Holmes

In the BBC version and the original text, we see that both Holmes and Watson share different opinions about their relationship. In the original text Watson seemed more grateful to have Holmes as his friend. The BBC version portrayed Watson having an argument with Holmes, resulting with him saying "I don't have friends John, I just have one", seeing that Watson wasn't really interested in Sherlock at that time.

#8 - Sarcasm

In the two versions, we see Holmes be incredibly clinical and sarcastic towards Watson. During the BBC version there are scenes when Sherlock is too restless, and blames everything on Watson, pointing out his faults and calling him "unused". To the extent of this problem, we portray that Sherlock is the sarcasm in their relationship.

#9 - A working relationship

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are great at solving cases together. We portray that they have a high degree of intelligence while solving big and small cases, which is why their business is so successful.

#10 - Bestfriends

Insulting eachother or not Holmes and Watson demonstrate that they have a rare companionship. They share the same attributes, the same career and the passionate characteristics that make them who they are as a two. In both versions, we see them always close together and never out of their visions.
