When World War I ended in 1918 and soldiers came home from Europe, people were eager to get on with their lives. The optimism led to major changes in practically all aspects all life for americans. One of them being transportation. This included the first major highways, railroads. and waterways.

Mass production of cars made it more affordable for people to travel

The first highways and major roads were developed in the 1920s which made it easier and more affordable to travel the country. People living in cold climates could drive south for vacations. The main transportation systems for far away and overseas travel were trains and ocean liners.

Another new transportation method in the 1920s were airplanes. During World War 1, The Allies, Germans, and American all used the new invention of airplanes. They were used for scouting and bombing. At the end of the war, people started to use airplanes as ways of transportation. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh gained international fame as the first pilot to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, from New York to Paris.
