WorkBC's Find Your Fit Tour

Students at Cedar Secondary participated in the Find Your Fit Tour - a BC-wide, fun, interactive and educational event that offers students a hands-on way to experience WorkBC’s Labour Market information. Students tested out occupational skills required to work in a range of occupations, and explored different careers that are in demand in the region and across the province.

Parenting Without Power Struggles

BGC Central Vancouver Island is hosting a free virtual session for parents of preteens on Thursdays, beginning in April 2023. The program is intended to support parents/guardians who are struggling even more with the added pressures these days. Registration is required; reserve your space today.

Regular Board Meeting

At the Regular Board Meeting on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, the Board approved the three-year local school calendars for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26; they received the budget survey results; and directed staff to conduct further consultation for potential NDSS options.

The Board directed staff to apply for funding to add a childcare space at Cedar Elementary and entered a 30-day consultation period for the draft privacy policy. View the entire agenda here.

Policy 3.10 - Privacy

The Board of Education seeks feedback on Board Governance Policy 3.10 – Privacy, through a notice of motion for 30 days, utilizing the consultation process as per Board Governance, Section 1, 2.7 – Policy Development. Please provide feedback via email by April 30, 2023.

Youth Climate Activism Award

The Youth Climate Activism Award 2023 is open to students in any grade. Nicknamed the 'Greta award' it requires applicants to demonstrate devotion to taking meaningful steps towards improving the outlook for our planet with respect to climate change.

The submission should be a film up to 5 minutes; a 500-word essay or a combination of text and photo essay that shares the applicant's passion and commitment to their climate activism.

The application period begins Earth Day (April 22, 2023) and closes on May 18, 2023.

Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching

Nominations for the Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching are being accepted. Know a teacher who made a difference? Each year, six teachers are awarded for their innovative approaches to teaching Canadian history. Teachers receive $2,500 and an additional $1,000 for their school. Nominate a teacher today!

Our Tellings: Interior Salish Stories of the Nlha7kápmx People

The City of Nanaimo Parks & Recreation hosts free youth drop-in opportunities for youth ages 10-17 years, beginning in April. Some require pre-registration and space is limited. Find out more.

Fletcher's Challenge 2023

Runners of Compassion is hosting Fletcher's Challenge 2023 on Friday, April 7, 2023. The challenge is a trail race and family walk/run on Nanaimo's best trails. There will also be a cookie walk and Easter egg hunt. Funds raised at the Fletcher's Challenge event are donated back to the community to assist underprivileged youth in accessing sports.
