AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program 2023 Recipients

The AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program has recognized five individuals as distinguished preceptors, for their dedication and commitment to excellence in experiential education and professional practice. This ninth cohort will receive a recognition plaque, complimentary AACP membership, and national recognition from AACP and other pharmacy associations.

The 2023 recipients are Dr. Kris Dunlap, University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy; Dr. Melissa Ha, University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Pharmacy; Dr. Whitney Jandreau, Husson University & University of New England; Dr. Peter Koval, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Dr. Stephane Seyse, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. The purpose of the AACP Distinguished Preceptor Recognition Program is to highlight preceptors, who are not full-time employees of a school/college of pharmacy, for their sustained commitment to excellence in experiential education and professional practice.

Kris Dunlap, Pharm.D.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy

Dr. Kris Dunlap is the pharmacy clinical coordinator in the Emergency Department at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Physics Education from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1998. After receiving her Doctor of Pharmacy from UAMS in 2006, Kris began working at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She is also currently working on getting a Master's in Clinical Toxicology from the University of Florida. Over the past 17 years, Kris has developed and expanded pharmacy services to the Arkansas Children’s Emergency Department. Kris loves the diverse and ever-changing environment that the Emergency Department provides. She serves on the Trauma Council, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, and ED Patient Satisfaction Work Group.

Kris taught school for five years before applying to pharmacy school – so teaching is one of her passions. Dr. Dunlap enjoys precepting 8-10 APPE students in the ED each year. Dr. Dunlap loves the challenge of helping students to excel in their own way, utilizing the students’ own learning goals to tailor their clinical experience. Kris is grateful to have precepted so many wonderful students who teach her, challenge her, and make her job a delight.

Melissa Ha, Pharm.D., BCCCP

University of Wisconsin–Madison School of pharmacy

Dr. Melissa Ha received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy in 2012. She completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency and PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, WI 2012-2014.

Melissa has been working as a Critical Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist since 2014. Her practice site has been the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital since 2015. She became a Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist in 2015. She also serves as a co-coordinator for Seminars in Critical Care, an elective course she helped to develop with Jeffrey Fish, PharmD, FCCM, BCCCP, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy since 2014. Melissa precepts pharmacy residents and students on their critical care rotations. Melissa was honored to previously have been recognized for precepting with the William S Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital Pharmacy Residency Preceptor of the Year in 2018 and with the Larry Boh Clinical Instructor Excellence Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy in 2019.

She is most proud of having served as a critical care pharmacist to our nation’s Veterans throughout the COVID-19 pandemic while teaching students and residents. Melissa has already precepted over 100 pharmacy students and residents in her career and is excited to continue to have the opportunity to serve as a preceptor for pharmacists of the future.

Whitney Jandreau, Pharm.D., BCPS

Husson University School of Pharmacy & University of New England School of Pharmacy

Dr. Whitney Jandreau is an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacist Specialist and Coordinator of pharmacy student programs and preceptor at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Her practice experience includes a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at VA Maine Healthcare System followed by seven years of inpatient practice.

Whitney is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) with a clinical passion for substance use disorder. In addition to program development and coordination of the Longitudinal Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (LAPPE) Program and Progressive Clinical Intern Program, Whitney is a PGY1 Residency Preceptor and member of the Residency Advisory Committee. Whitney is passionate about developing practice-ready learners through experiential learning platforms and about supporting fellow preceptors through this rewarding work.

Peter Koval, Pharm.D., BCPS, CPP

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Dr. Peter Koval is Director of Pharmacy Education with the Piedmont Area Health Education Center in Greensboro. He is currently in his 27th year as a clinical pharmacy adjunct faculty. He has precepted more than 700 months of pharmacy students/residents and has mentored 50 ambulatory care-focused pharmacy residents.

At his clinical practice site, the Cone Health Family Medicine residency program, he has contributed to the interdisciplinary education of more than 200 family medicine physician residents. In his collaborative practice, as a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, he strives to have pharmacy students and residents effectively participate in pharmacist-led direct patient care. Dr. Koval has contributed to the profession at the national level through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) where he was involved with the development of the Board Certification in Ambulatory Care credential and also served on the BPS executive board.

At the state level, he has made research and educational contributions through the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists. He has been active in advocacy for pharmacist involvement in tobacco cessation. Pete also serves as the planning committee chair for the North Carolina Ambulatory Care Practice Forum.

Stephanie Seyse, Pharm.D., BCPS, FASHP, CACP

University at Buffalo, The State University of New York

Dr. Stephanie Seyse received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Duquesne University, and her Doctor of Pharmacy from The Ohio State University. Upon graduation, she completed a PGY1 pharmacy residency at Buffalo General Medical Center where she is currently the Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator and the Residency Program Director for both the PGY1 pharmacy residency and PGY2 Internal Medicine residency programs.

She is passionate about advancing practice for all pharmacists as evidenced by her work with professional pharmacy organizations. She has been very active in professional organizations throughout her career and has held numerous leadership positions at both the local and state level for the New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists (NYSCHP) including NYSCHP President and is currently the Chair of the NYSCHP House of Delegates. Dr. Seyse is also passionate about mentoring the next generation of pharmacists and has been precepting IPPE/APPE students and PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents on a variety of learning experiences for almost 30 years.
