Student Affairs June 21, 2023

June 21, 2023 | Edition #83

Message from the VP

Dear Student Affairs Colleagues,

Believe it or not, we are more than halfway through June. Our incoming Lobos are bringing energy and excitement to campus on a weekly basis now and our planning and development for the start of the fall semester, just two months away, is in a consistent state of progress. While our work never truly slows, I hope you are taking time to rest, travel, be with family and friends, and enjoy the beautiful weather we have been fortunate to experience so far this summer. While it is warming up quite a bit now, it's always great to be outside and see the bright blue New Mexico skies. I myself have been able to enjoy seeing more of our lovely state in the past few weeks both personally and on university business. Just last week I was in Taos spending time with our student affairs colleagues on that beautiful campus and learning more about the distinct student needs that drive practice in northern New Mexico.

With the hiring of our Executive Directors, Pam Agoyo and Dr. Jenna Crabb, we are launching a search for a new Director of Career Services now and will launch a search for a new Director of American Indian Student Services in the fall. I hope you will join me in welcoming Pam and Jenna into their new roles as well as our new Director of Operations, Florencio Olguin, who will join us from the College of Fine Arts. I look forward to gathering with you all in the fall as these new leaders and our Student Affairs leadership team work together to chart our continued growth and development as a division in service to student thriving and success.

With appreciation,

Eric

Olguin Named Operations Director for Student Affairs

Florencio Olguin

After a competitive nationwide search, Florencio Olguin Jr. has been named as the Director of Operations for Student Affairs. As a seasoned Lobo, Olguin has been a part of The University of New Mexico community for the past 15 years as a student, fellow, staff member, and adjunct faculty. He will begin the Operations Director role on July 1.

Olguin is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership and Administration at New Mexico State University where he was selected as a Jackson Scholar with the University Council for Educational Administration. He earned both his master’s degree in Public Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism & Mass Communication at UNM. He has also held adjunct faculty appointments in First Year Experience at UNM and Central New Mexico Community College.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to join UNM Student Affairs – a division whose programs and services invested in me as a first-generation college student from Santa Rosa, New Mexico,” Olguin says. “I look forward to working collaboratively with colleagues across the division to deliver operational efficiencies as well as amplify the collective impact that Student Affairs programs have on the student experience at UNM.”

UNM Children’s Campus achieves reaccreditation marking its 30th anniversary of accreditation and has received Increased ECECD grant funding to expand PreK programming

Since 1993, the UNM Children’s Campus has been nationally accredited by NAEYC and recognized as a high-quality education and care program—a national distinction achieved by less than 10 percent of all early childhood centers, preschools, and kindergartens.

The UNM Children’s Campus (UNMCC) was recently reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). “Over the past thirty years, we have prided ourselves on continuing to maintain the distinguished mark of quality from NAEYC and to be recognized for our efforts and commitment to ensuring the highest professional standards,” says Daniela Baca, UNMCC director.

Every five years, UNM is required to go through the rigorous reaccreditation process to demonstrate evidence that they successfully meet 10 research-based standards for young children’s development and learning. UNMCC just recently went through the process of completing a self-study, verification of the program’s successful meeting of numerous criteria, and a site visit from a NAEYC assessor—resulting in outstanding scores and reaccreditation through 2029.

Career Services Seeks Director

NM Career Services is searching for a new director following the promotion of its long-time director, Dr. Jenna Crabb. Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Resources, the Career Services director will administer all aspects of the career services office including staff management, budget and day-to-day administration. Additional duties include clinical supervision of career counselors, short-term and long-term program planning and marketing of services. Best consideration date is June 28.

Meet the Finalists for WRC Director

After a competitive nation-wide search we are pleased to announce the finalists for the Women’s Resource Center director. You are invited to attend the community and campus forums either in person or via zoom. The position provides strategic direction, consultation, and support to the university community in addressing in an integrated way the education needs, prospects, and related concerns of women's needs within the region.

As the independent voice of the students of The University of New Mexico since 1895, the Daily Lobo has achieved countless milestones—many of which are cause for celebration. Each year, members of the UNM Daily Lobo and Student Publications Alumni Chapter honor outstanding alumni at their Hall of Honor celebration.

“The Hall of Honor celebration is an important part of our alumni weekend. Alumni gather to reminisce, look through back issues of publications, and celebrate outstanding alumni on their accomplishments as they reflect on their time at the Daily Lobo,” says Daven Quelle, Business Manager, UNM Student Publications.

As one of the most active alumni chapters on campus, the Daily Lobo and Student Publications chapter boasts many recognizable members including this year’s Hall or Honor awardees: Matthew Reisen, Albuquerque Journal reporter; Tony Hillerman, World War combat veteran, UNM journalism professor and one of New Mexico’s foremost novelists; and Iliana Limón Romero, Los Angeles Times’ assistant managing editor for sports.
