Victorian Schoolroom at Park Hall September 29th

Before we entered the schoolroom, we needed to be properly dressed, have clean hands and faces and wait in two lines. We had to pay a penny each to go into school. If we forgot our money, we would be expected to walk home again to fetch it.

We began the day with a prayer and then listened to different children reading aloud to the whole class. We needed to listen carefully to be able to answer questions on the text.

Writing on a slate was difficult but our handwriting needed to be accurate and neat.

We learned about Queen Victoria and used an abacus to calculate how long ago she reigned.

There were lots of artefacts around the classroom to show us what school life was like in Victorian times.
