BODY Figurative Work by Mississippi Artists

Peter Graff - 'Morning'

BODY

Presented by The Little Yellow Building

Angi Cooper

"My figures were drawn in continuing education life study sessions at the Memphis College of Art. It is no small feat for a model to disrobe in front of strangers' eyes in order for them to gain valuable experience drawing the human form. These life studies were made possible by these incredibly selfless people."

"My art captures a simple moment of everyday life. Working primarily in oil, I tell stories with color, value, texture, and line. With occasional symbolism and abstract elements, I frequently use the female figure, as the gestures and expressions can say so much. The stories explore the essence of human experiences common through many cultures."

"My paintings not only expose, but also celebrate how beautiful our vulnerability can be. Through layered and gestural brushwork, I collage objects, figures, and other symbolic subjects to craft simple, poetic visuals. Direct observation mingles with memory, imagination, and play as I unveil very personal, but at the same time universal stories."

Joseph Prine III

"I am a Mississippi painter. My work examines the tensions and feelings of alienation between the traditions of rural Mississippi life, my time in the US Marine Corps; and the paradigms of modern civilian society. My techniques include mobilizing and incorporating traditional European Old Master visions and methods into contemporary painting and image making. Forming a uniquely contemporary Mississippi hunter’s personal reflection that is established in the language of ancient tradition. My first-hand experiences with death, love, hatred, and survivor’s guilt are the driving force behind all things I make. In my work nothing is limited, and through a deeply personal exploration of the struggles of childhood and adult trauma; I create works that take the personal to universal implications."

'Broken Promise' 2021 - 48x24 - Oil on Canvas - NFS

"This is my tribute to the era of my grandparents. My grandmother raised me on the old movies of her youth; Tallulah Bankhead was the femme fatal of the Great Depression. My grandmother modeled her style upon Tallulah and in my young mind I conflated images of the two. When I see Tallulah Bankhead, I almost think of her as my grandmother. I painted a tribute to her with the purple iris flowers and orange butterflies from my grandmother's garden."

'Portrait of Tallulah Bankhead' 2022 - 12x16 - Mixed Media - $300

Haley Sipes

"My achromatic paintings explore themes of absence, family, ambiguity, nostalgia, and the unknown. The scuba divers are a motif synthesized from the remembrance of my father's passion. My art is a personal narrative comparing the literal theme of the ocean's depths to psychological depths. It exposes the depth of loss while preserving the memory of my late father."

"I am drawn to the beauty of the feminine in all its forms—from delicate to fierce—and to capturing it in a single frame. I aspire to create meaningful connections with my subjects at every sitting and communicate that through my images. My hope is that you are drawn to these photographs and feel the power exuding from the women featured in them. Though they are wordless, they speak volumes. Summer Baldwin

"Aloneliness: a screendance is a short dance film by Summer Baldwin and Rachel Searcey. The film is a reimagining of an experimental modern dance piece for the stage, Aloneliness. In the film adaptation, the dancer explores the experience of becoming overstimulated in social interactions, which causes her to seek relief in peaceful solitude; only to find that too much solitude leads her to feelings of crushing loneliness. The film follows her arduous journey through these dark emotions, into the overwhelming relief she finally realizes upon their passing."
