TMBS News December 2021

Welcome to our final newsletter of 2021. Wow, what a year!

I distinctly remember the end of 2020 and the optimism that we all had about a brighter year ahead. I’m not sure it went quite as we had hoped, but looking at this newsletter, we still have so much to celebrate here at The Market Bosworth School.

Whilst this has been one of the hardest terms that I have ever experienced as a Headteacher, the attitude, resilience and positivity shown by our students is an example for us all. As a school we have tried to bring as much “normality” back to school life as possible. I’m incredibly proud of our staff, who have been working under tremendous pressure to ensure that we have always been able to support and deliver a fully enriched expert curriculum. It’s been wonderful to see a return to so many extra-curricular activities, with trips, sporting fixtures, pantomimes and musical performances all taking place.

I really do hope that 2022 will be the start of a more promising outlook, but know that whatever happens, we will do our absolute best to ensure our students don’t miss out on the education they deserve.

Thank you for your support, Stuart Wilson

We will remember them

On 11th November, as part of their English lesson, Year 7 created Remembrance poems. We discussed the symbolism of the poppy and how we use it to commemorate those who gave their lives, at this time of year. We then read and discussed 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae and drafted our own poems, finishing off by writing them up in neat on our poppy templates to display. 7A decided to create a door memorial display to show our respect and hopefully bring a moment of reflection to all staff, students and the rest of the school community who walked past the English classroom during that week. We will remember them.

Children in Need 2021

And what a Children In Need it was at TMBS! To say the students at TMBS stepped it up this year is an understatement! Following the success of last year's Ramble with Year 7 and given the ongoing pandemic, we felt that doing the Ramble was the way forward and the Year 7s certainly did not disappoint. A fantastic afternoon was had on the school field with some students taking on the challenge and running (and they did not stop!), some decided to cartwheel and some enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and occasional flurry of bubbles from St Peters Primary playground.

There were a few students that went above and beyond and completed their own Ramble outside of school with a special mention going to Daniel Ahearne, Grace Woolerton and Sophie Bromby all raising hundreds of pounds on their own.

In addition to the Ramble we wanted to get the rest of the school involved in the day in some way and what better way to do that than a bake sale! Not only a bake sale but an Inter-form Bake Sale where the Year 8 tutor groups competed to see who could raise the most money. Well, cake came flying in first thing and wow were there cakes! Well done to 8F who raised the most money, but a massive thank you to all the students and, I am sure in some cases parents, who baked and provided ingredients, purchased cakes and cans of pop to raise money for Children In Need.

This year I am so proud to say that The Market Bosworth School raised a grand total of £4157.00 - an amazing achievement topping previous records and each and every student should be extremely proud. Well done and thank you TMBS! Mrs Donlan

Year 7 - the competition continues

A huge congratulations and thanks to all of Year 7 for their efforts in our tutor challenges so far. It is great fun to see them all working together and enjoying themselves. I can't wait to see what they create together in challenge 3! Mrs Holmes

Fun on the Farm

A great time was had by all at the finalists' weekend, as part of the LEAF: National Competition in Food, Farming and Natural Environment. Staying at Llysfasi College in Wales, students were given the opportunity to try their hand at a wide variety of different activities including a 6.00am morning milking session, forestry and field thinning skills and tractor driving. Competition was tight and we were exceptionally proud of our representatives Holly, Leanna and Rosie who had to present their work and findings first. We were unlucky this time, but who knows maybe next year?

Rotary Young Chef competition

The young chef competition has returned with a bang this year. Some great dishes were produced by the competitors with the winning menu created by Cerys - stuffed potatoes, pie and seasonal vegetables and pineapple fritters for pudding. Congratulations Cerys and well done to everyone involved!

Year 10 Hospitality & Catering

This term Hospitality and Catering students have been busy making a wide variety of dishes from Indian feasts to show stopper desserts. Some amazing results have been produced by all students. Keep it up!

Cinderella DID go to the ball....

What a Panto! We were so thrilled to be able to perform again to a live audience on Wednesday 8th December. KS3 Drama and Dance club did a fantastic job performing the pantomime Cinderella to their friends and family members. I was so proud of all the hard work that the students put in and their efforts really did pay off. Parents and families have given lots of positive feedback and it was so lovely to see the students out there performing again.

We would like to thank all parents for their support with after school rehearsals and making sure students were organised with all of their costumes. Special 'thank yous' also need to be extended to Miss Stokes and her team of Year 9 artists for the wonderful backdrop that they designed, Mrs Jones for repairing costumes, Miss Smith for operating the sound desk, Mrs Mould and Mrs Thompson for selling tickets in the office and Miss Twells for her help with rehearsals. The lights, sound, costume and cast came together to create a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Well done everyone! Myself (Mr Gillespie) and Mrs Donlan are so proud of you all. It seems fitting to include an extract from the final scene of our pantomime...

"So all that remains is to wish you goodnight, The step sisters need to get their dresses off, they are pinching and quite tight! We hope your Christmas is merry and warm, It has been lovely on stage, back able to perform!"

The performances continue....

What a crazy year! After the lack of live performances last year we were very excited to get back to performing for the school and the local community. But just like for everyone else, this year has also proved to be a challenging one for us. We have rearranged, rehearsed, reconfigured, rescheduled and cancelled many events this year. But I am happy to say that we got there in the end (or at least half way at the time of writing this!)

On Sunday 5th December we performed at the Market Bosworth light switch on, our first public performance in 2 years! We had many of our key stage 3 and 4 students performing in our orchestra, woodwind group and choirs. The day was a huge success and the students did TMBS proud and put members of the public into the festive spirit.

In the run up to Christmas we will be doing some fundraising performances at Dobbie’s garden centre and we will be performing to the pupils of St Peter’s primary school. To finish things off we will be putting on our first Christmas showcase in 2 years, we hope to see you there.

As always (but especially this year!) the music department could not function without our amazing peripatetic team and other members of TMBS who help run events, so I would like to thank Miss Hodgson, Miss Mitchell, Miss Smith, Mr Sweeney, Miss Abbott, Mr Beckitt and Miss Honor-Wright for all of their help with lessons and clubs.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mr Morrow.

Silver success

On Saturday 11th December Eppie entered the county table tennis Leicestershire development league competition, which brings together table tennis players from across all county schools as part of a national competition.

Eppie is now the reserve county champion....a silver medalist.... doing one better than in 2019 when she achieved a bronze. It is only the winners that represent the county nationally... but this is still a great achievement as table tennis competitions only started again in September this year since the start of the pandemic. This is a great addition for her GCSE portfolio.

Congratulations Eppie, what a fantastic achievement!

Attendance news

Congratulations!!

Whole School attendance this term is 92.2%. Year 7 are currently 93.2% & Year 8 top once again with 93.3%

Thank you all for this massive effort, this is a great achievement in difficult circumstances for everyone!

Can we also remind parents that we do require a call on each day of your child’s absence for safeguarding purposes. (Unless it is a confirmed isolation period).

Season's Greetings from the Attendance Team

TMBS Fundraising Committee 12 Days of Christmas raffle

All departments in school have been busy getting their raffle donations ready for this year’s Christmas raffle! We have had some amazing prizes this year, and some very grateful winners. We are leading up to our main prize of a £500 Amazon voucher which will be announced on the last day of term and it’s been a lot of fun watching the prize draws every morning.

Some of the prizes include an ice cream maker, vouchers for indoor crazy golf, some lovely food hampers and tickets to a show at Curve in Leicester.

TMBS Fundraising Committee have been working hard to get the raffle up and running this year, and all proceeds go right back to the departments who have so generously given up their time, money, effort (and dignity!) to help make this year’s raffle a success.

News from the catering team

I'm excited to report that after nearly 18 months of using the temporary catering trailer (or snack van as it was affectionately called) we now have a permanent hatch. Our new purpose built area will enable us to expand our service and range to the students. In the fullness of time I'd like to run a competition to officially name the new hatch area and also ask for the students' views on what they would like to see being sold from there (within reason of course!) Mr Palmer

New menus for January

Please see our new menu cycle below, which starts in January. Please ensure you check your child's catering account regularly and top up if necessary.
