Hawaii Natural Disasters By: Jacob, and nathan
Tornadoes happen once or twice a year in Hawaii and cause alot of damage of houses and hotels and harbour stuff. Like boats. This one you see is called a water spout. These happen pretty rare in Hawaii. It only happens in water.
The population of Hawaii is 1.42 million. People like living there for the waters, and the beautiful weather mostly. They also go there because, the culture and tradition. Believe me or not, people go there because of the volcanoes.
A volcanoe erupted in Kilauea in hawaii in 1983, it destroyed houses with lava and fire. But no one was killed or injured in this eruption. Volcanoes erupt atleast 7-9 times a year in Hawaii.
Earthquakes are REALLY bad in Hawaii. In 1868, yes that's pretty long ago, a 7.9 earthquake struck Hawaii and killed 77 people. That is close to an 8 earthquake, which only happens once every 5 years. This earthquake even started a tsunami that created a LANDSLIDE and desroyed Hawaii. This was the last recording of an earthquake in Hawaii.
Hurricane Iwa Nov. 23 1982 hit the islands of Niihau, Kauai, and Oahu. It was recorded the worst hurricane in Hawaii since 1859. In damage costed 312 million dollars, the winds went up 90mph (150 km/h)
In October 2004, a flash flood in Manoa valley on Oahu, soaked the ground floor of the University of Hawaii library. It also damaged at least 60 homes and caused over 1 million dollars worth of damage.
