Fork Union Military Academy Named Among Best in Virginia Addressing Student Well-Being

Virginia Living Magazine recognizes Fork Union Military Academy in the Private K-12 Schools in the April 2022 Issue.

RICHMOND, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Several area schools have been recognized for programs aimed at addressing the mental well-being of students.

Virginia Living magazine editorial staff created a list of the Top Schools and Universities for 2022 for its April issue.

The special section looks at wellness programs at schools across Virginia, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When we look at innovation in education nationwide, much of that is originating on campuses across Virginia,” said editor Constance Costas. “We were particularly impressed with the recent trend in student wellness programs that are teaching the skills that establish lifelong resilience.”

The publication looked at schools in several categories, such as colleges and universities, graduate programs, private high schools, private K-12 schools, private K-8 schools, public school divisions, and special needs schools.

At the higher education level, the University of Virginia was listed for the College of Arts and Sciences' Program of Fundamental Neuroscience.

In the private high school category, the Blue Ridge School in Greene County was recognized for a program that raises money for the Headstrong Foundation, providing mental health treatment for military members, veterans and their families.

Four private K-12 schools made the list: Fork Union Military Academy, St. Anne’s-Belfield, Tandem Friends School, and the Covenant School.

For private K-8 schools, there are two from this area recognized: the Field School of Charlottesville and Grymes Memorial School in Orange.

Lastly, the Lafayette School in Troy is named under the special needs category.

Virginia Living says it selected schools that have implemented programs or capital improvements to strengthen the student experience, both in the classroom and in the community.

Julius Twins Shine at the 23rd Annual Gus Lacy Track Classic

Saturday, April 23, 2022

FORK UNION, VA – Senior twin brothers Dominique and Dominic Julius of the Fork Union Military Academy Outdoor Track and Field program shined at the 23rd annual Gus Lacy Track Classic this past weekend at the Gus Lacy Outdoor Track.

The Julius brothers went for a combined 35 points to lead the Blue Devils to a third-place finish overall with 62 points. Fork Union trailed the Gus Lacy Track Classic Champion Woodberry Forest (144) and runner up Western Albemarle (82.5).

"What an absolutely fantastic day for Fork Union," said head coach Winston Brown. "It was a great meet with a great crowd and fantastic performances. The Julius brothers took down three meet records with Dominic also getting the school record in the 200-meter. Our 4x400 team was an easy winner and is now the No. 2 team in Virginia, all classifications. I would like to give thanks to so many members of our staff and faculty for helping make it a special day."

Dominique Julius led the way with individual gold medals in the 100-meter and long jump. The senior set a Gus Lacy Track Classic record in both events, coming in at the 10.68 mark of the 100-meter dash and jumping 23.5 feet in the long jump.

Dominic Julius won the 200-meter dash with a Gus Lacy Track Classic and school record of 21.34 seconds.

The twin brothers were also part of the 4x400 relay team who dominated the competition, winning the event by six seconds with a time of 3:24.09, which now ranks No. 2 in the state in all classifications.

In addition to the Julius brothers, three seniors recorded personal-best performances. Senior Gavin Demorro set a personal best in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet to place fourth overall. Senior Mason Bligen took third in the high jump, clearing 5-feet, 10-inches. Senior Elijah Munoz threw the discus 128 feet to place third overall.

"A few other highlights for Fork Union include Nhyiraba Asumadu Addo, who placed third in the shot and had to navigate all of the other festivities throughout the day," added Brown. "Ayden Bland continues to get better in the jumping events, Robel Lulseged and Jackson Edwards ran a tough 800-meters and every single one of our athletes did a great job despite the enormous obstacles."

Prior to the start of the meet, Fork Union celebrated its annual banner honoree, the 2007 alumnus Jamie Reichlen. Reichlen came to the Academy in the fall of 2005 and quickly established himself as an elite athlete. A two-time All-American, Reichlen was the ultimate teammate. In 2006 and 2007, Reichlen took on anchoring the sprint medley just moments after earning All-American honors so more of his teammates could participate at Nationals. His signature moment came in 2007 at the State Indoor meet where in the span of 25 minutes he won the 500 and the 1000-meter runs. He came back later in the meet to help the 4x400 team win the State title. Reichlen was also a three-time Prep League Champion in the 400, 800 and 1000-meters. He went on to compete at the University of North Carolina.

Prep Lacrosse on a Four-Game Win Streak with Wins over New Covenant and Covenant School

Monday, May 2, 2022

FORK UNION, VA -- The Fork Union Military Academy Prep lacrosse team has won four straight with wins over New Covenant School and Covenant School this past week.

With the victories, the Blue Devils sit 5-3 overall.

On Friday, April 22, Fork Union traveled to New Covenant School and battled for an 11-10 overtime win.

"I'm really happy with our performance at New Covenant," said head coach Chip Chace. "It was a very close game, back and forth the entire time, but our boys never gave up and ultimately got the win in overtime. It was a full team effort and I was really glad to see our young guys step up. Hopefully, we can clean some things up and have the same result when we play them again on the 12th."

Almost a week later on Monday, May 2, the Blue Devils hosted Covenant School and defeated the Eagles, 16-11.

"It's always great when you can get two wins against the same team in one year," said Chace. "That is not an easy task to accomplish and I am proud of the way our boys executed the game plan. I was a little nervous when we were down by three in the third quarter, but luckily, Lucas Yates decided to take over the game and score seven unanswered goals to give us the lead. We also had great performances from Michael Marandure, Aiden Bailey, Eric Jones and Austin Lenherr. This win guarantees that we will have a winning season and I couldn't be happier for our team."

Fork Union will return to action Thursday, May 12 when the squad hosts New Covenant School at 4:30 p.m. Senior Day celebrations will begin at 4:20 p.m. prior to the start of the game.

Monday, May 2, 2022

FORK UNION, VA -- The Fork Union Military Academy tennis team finished the season with a 9-0 win over the Carmel School this past Monday. The Carmel School is from Caroline County.

"Our tennis team did a great job this past Monday getting their first overall win of the season," said head coach Mark Shuman. "I have been pleased with the progress of our tennis players, who have worked very hard improving their skills each week. We had very strong matches from everyone as we won the match 9-0. Most of our guys were able to sweep their opponents in singles and doubles, and this led to us finishing our season with the best overall match versus Randolph Macon Academy.
