Kodiak 4-H Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, from my family to yours.

This newsletter comes to your in-boxes a bit after the start of the month, thanks to a long break filled with winter fun, laughter, hugs, family time, travel chaos and yummy treats. Whatever your holiday break brought you, I hope you find yourself well-rested and excited about 2023!

Congratulations are in order!
Congratulations to all who participated in the 2022/23 Alaska 4-H Shooting Sports Quiz Bowl from Kodiak! Don't forget the 2023 NATIONAL Quiz Bowl, coming up January 16, 2023. Registration begins January 1. More information is available online at https://4-hshootingsports.org/quiz-bowl-study-materials/
4-H Happenings

Kodiak has a very active shooting sports program, in large part due to our amazing 4-H leader Velma Vining. Velma is pictured here at one of the recent project meetings for the shotgun discipline. Thanks for all of your hard work Velma!!

The Alaska 4-H Shooting Sports Program uses the 4-H Thriving Model of Positive Youth Development to provide instruction on the safe and responsible use of firearms. The archery, rifle, shotgun and pistol disciplines are all currently offered in Kodiak.

Our special interest art project kicked off their monthly meetings with an activity fun for the whole family! Thanks to Shelly Lawson, we were able to create a ton of nature inspired holiday cards. After the event, one family said, "We are now very inspired over here to make as many cards with watercolors as we can!!"

There's no such thing as too much watercoloring!! Art project meetings take place on the third Thursday of the month - let Kate know if you'd like to be added to the list!

Miss Barbara & Miss Lisa continue to share their knowledge and love of baking to our 4-H members.

4-H members kicked off the new year making one of Barbara's specialties...soft pretzels! Barbara has taught this recipe and technique to many 4-H members and leaders over the years, and it remains a favorite!

Want to try them out for yourself? Check out the blog we created during the pandemic for how-to instructions!

Helping hands, messy counters, friendly giggles, views you can't beat...just a day in the life of a Kodiak 4-H Cloverbud 😍

In December, we had SNOW much fun creating edible playdough snow creatures, pinecone snowy owls, salt dough sea glass ornaments and enjoyed a healthy snack - cheesestick snowmen! Thanks to our many helpers for helping with this big group of amazing kiddos!

Family Fun Nights for ALL MEMBERS!

Family fun nights are a great way to connect with 4-H families that don't necessarily do the same projects as you, complete club-wide service projects and get to know 4-H leaders! They are designed for all ages to have fun and learn by doing! In December, 4-H families enjoyed a hot cocoa bar, STEM activities and crafts! Thank you to all those who donated items to the Kodiak Women's Resource & Crisis Center. The folks there were filled with gratitude when the items were dropped off.

Thanks to all of our hard working 4-H leaders and parents who helped pull off a fantastic event!
Upcoming /New Project Updates
  • Remember, rifle is starting up again this month! The rifle project leaders will be at the indoor range on Wednesday evenings, from 5-8:30pm for all 4-H members who have completed their 9 lessons to practice shooting, but those new to the program or who haven't completed their lessons can also work on completing the first 9 sessions. This is a drop-in situation - come when you can!
  • Horse lovers - we will be meeting the 2nd Friday of the month from 4-5:30 for the next few months, meeting and learning about some of the horses in Kodiak! More details to come...be sure to check your emails!
  • For gardening, gingerbread, archery, and pistol..keep an eye out on the monthly calendar that goes out in these newsletters for upcoming events and activities! You will also receive an email from your project leaders when the meetings are going to begin.

New 4-H Club!

The Kodiak livestock club will have their first meeting January 8. If you haven't signed up yet, please go to Zsuite and add the livestock club and choose your project! This club is for those interested in raising their own market animal or for those who are just interested in learning about livestock.

For those interested in raising a market animal for auction this year through 4-H, please SAVE THE DATE:

Even if you didn't sign up but think you're interested in raising a market animal- come and learn about the program!
4-H in the Community
A special thanks to Miss Nancy at KIHA for hosting Miss Danielle and Miss Kate at the after school program there. We had a ton of fun creating 4-H critters, and exploring what the four "H"s mean! Each 4-H critter had to have a Head, a Heart, Hands and a Healthy habit! What a creative group of kids!

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!
Hope you'll enjoy this throw-back photo! 4-H may change faces over the years, but the mission remains the same: 4-H empowering youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults.
Final Thoughts...

In closing, I would like to share how thankful I am to work with the leaders in our community. They come in all different names, ages and from different backgrounds. If you look closely, you'll likely see one in yourself.

Stay tuned for our next issue coming toward the end of January, when we'll announce February opportunities and events! Til then, if you've got questions, feel free to reach out to your leaders or Kate at the 4-H office!
