We Had Beautiful Weather and Engaging Activities

Miss Maple Won An Egg That Spits Out Slime. Yay?

If Your Child is Not Feeling Well, Please Do Not Send Your Child to School.

We are seeing many students in the health room who left home that morning not feeling well. And, we have had multiple cases of strep over several classrooms. Please see the sheet attached in the email for guidance on keeping your student at home.

Miller Kindergarten Orientation May 11, 5:00 pm

This will be a repeat of the orientation we had in March. Learn more about Miller Elementary and kindergarten specifically. You may bring your child with you and our educational assistants will take the children to the playground to play, read a story and have a light snack while we meet with adults. Then, the kids will rejoin us and we will do a school tour.

Please register ASAP with Bend - La Pine Schools so we have a good idea of our numbers for kindergarten. https://www.bend.k12.or.us/district/parents/enrollment

Street Dog Hero Needs Our Help!

Our last community service project will be collecting items for dogs that Street Dog Hero has rescued. They are in need of collars, harnesses, leashes and flea and tic meds (even if they are old).

We are also collecting used sneakers that will be recycled. Funds go to SDH for bringing them in and they do not end up in the landfill. BONUS!

There will be bins out front each day. Thanks, as always, for you generosity! Go Miller Families!

Oregon Statewide Assessments for Students in 3rd - 8th and 11th Grade

Oregon is committed to preparing every learner with academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Oregon’s statewide assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics are fully aligned to Oregon’s State Standards and provide students in grades 3-8 and 11, along with their families, one measure of academic achievement and growth.

These Assessments

  • are created by educators in Oregon and across several other states
  • challenge your child to think critically and apply their knowledge across a variety of contexts
  • go beyond multiple choice and ask your child to explain their answers
  • act as a snapshot of your child’s progress that may be considered along with other pieces of information to determine your child’s academic success
  • helps schools and districts evaluate their systems of teaching and learning, as well as identify groups of students whose academic needs may not be adequately met
  • help communities understand how well their public schools are performing

Description Of Rights

Oregon law (ORS 329.479) permits parents/guardians and students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and/or Mathematics by submitting the opt-out form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is excused from a statewide ELA or mathematics assessment with supervised study time while other students are testing. If you would like to opt out, fill out the attached form and give it to your student's teacher. The opt out form is linked in the email.

If you have any questions about Oregon Statewide Assessments reach out to John Craft @ 541-355-2506 or john.craft@bend.k12.or.us.

From Ms. Home in the Library

April was poetry month and WOW!! did these kids shine in their library classes. The 3rd-5th graders engaged in some amaaaaazing slam poetry. So many kiddos entered our slam contest and the grade level winners performed at the all-school assembly. Here are our winners:

  • 3rd grade: Kenzie Schumacher and Georgia DeRose (TEMPLETON)
  • 4th grade: Maple Mees, Lilly Curtis, and Kennedy Petersen (PERRY)
  • 5th grade: Marley Maidl (KERR)

I have videos of all the kids that entered. If you would like me to send you their video, please ask your child for permission and then email me. I will send it on over! FYI if you are wondering how I got these kiddos pumped up for slam poetry, here is a video I showed them. They LOVED it!! https://youtu.be/VuOOV06cmpI.

Lastly, I need all books to be returned by June 1. Please continue to help your reader to keep track of their library books and get them back as soon as possible. Thank you!

Feel free to reach out anytime @ laura.homekaiser@bend.k12.or.us

Miller Focus

Social and Emotional Learning

We are focusing on integrity through the end of the school year. This would be a great time to talk about doing the right thing simply because you know it is the right thing to do!

Community Service

We will be supporting homeless animals during May and June! Please bring in your used or new collars, harnesses, leashes, and flea and tic medicine (even if it is old). We are also collecting used sneakers that will be recycled. Funds go to SDH for bringing them in and they do not end up in the landfill. There will be bins out front each day.

Sustainability

We will do our best to recycle what we can and reuse what cannot be recycled, as we get to the end of the school year.

TREX Plastic Recycling is back at Miller!

It is EXTREMELY important that only certain types of plastic go in the TREX recycling. If the plastic is stretchy and you can poke a hole in it with your finger, it CAN GO in the TREX bin. Also, I could use some help getting all the bags to Safeway West. Even if you can do 1 drop off/month, that would be a great help! jen.healy@bend.k12.or.us.
