Identity and Wellness
This half-day workshop will combine the topics of research, teaching, and professional development with issues of wellness and identity. The goal will be to demystify some of the terminology of teaching and research, while providing graduate students and early career professionals with wellness tools. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Registration is free, but pre-registration is required. Participation is limited to 50 individuals.

Be Who You Wanna Be: How to foster individual wellness and identity

This panel is for graduate students and early career professionals struggling with questions about identity and wellbeing. Academia can be a very high-pressure sector to work and thrive in with publish-or-perish tenure requirements, active research agendas, and teaching demands. These issues can be compounded when external pressures exist that can come in the form of micro-aggressions and targeted legislation against research and scholarly agendas. This panel will address questions about imposters syndrome, as well as navigating personal identity and wellbeing in academia. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss issues of personal growth within academia with qualified panelists from diverse backgrounds and work experiences.
Research University versus Teaching University: Which one is right for you?

For individuals navigating the job market, the distinctions betwixt the various classifications for higher education institutions can often be confusing. R1, R2, teaching, private, and public colleges and universities all have various advantages and challenges, and instructors’ duties may vary across these different institutions. With panelists employed across a range of colleges and universities, this panel addresses these discrepancies, with a focus on the pedagogical work that occurs at each.
Publish and Prevail: How to find success in the peer review process

This panel on academic publications, featuring esteemed journal editors, will focus on the critical concerns that students encounter in the realm of academic publication. The discussion will cover topics including dos and don’ts for journal submissions, the communication tips for the revise and resubmit (R&R) process, suggestions for handling rejections, and insights into special issues. This panel will provide an opportunity for direct conversations between students and journal editors and address confusion among young scholars.
Location
There is a parking lot attached to the MET Building with about 30 spaces. There is also street parking in front of the building and on nearby streets. There is no parking enforcement on Sundays at Howard.
