Hello! My name is Crystal Cortez and I am now a junior at Catalina High School. I was born inTucson, Arizona and I live with my mom, sister, brother, and dad. I chose to join LSWHTA because my AVID teacher was pushing us to join. I also wanted to get a better grasp at what exactly archaeology is and how it functioned. My friend Hailey and I decided to join together.
Throughout the program we have been to a assortment of places. Some of my favorites are the Grand Canyon, Montezuma Well, and San Xavier. One of the final trips we went on was the Grand Canyon and that was the place I had the most fun at. The Colorado river has shaped the Grand Canyon for billions of years. Seeing the Grand Canyon felt unreal. It looked like it was digitally placed there. At San Xavier you can see a lot of the different influences throughout the place. The native peoples still live there because it is on a reservation. At Montezuma Well the story that is being told is the people who originated there came from the well that they live at now. You can see small places along the walls of the well that have houses.
There are many people who I met that have taken archaeology as their own profession. There were people that are Park Rangers. The main responsibility of a park ranger is protecting and supervising designated outdoor areas. Park rangers patrol the grounds and make sure that campers, hikers and other visitors are following the rules including fire safety regulations and do not disrupt the natural environment or fellow guests. Zoorchaeology is a branch of archaeology that studies ancient animal remains. Bio archaeology is another branch of archaeology. That is the study human skeletal remains from archaeological sites. The tree ring lab is where they study how old trees are based on how many rings the tree has. The more rings the tree has the older it is.
