Julia S. Art 1 Portfolio / Winter 2022 / Strath Haven H.S

This is my five-object study drawing. The theme was to choose an object that is important to you, so I chose my childhood stuffed animal. I used pencil, pen, and sharpie, along with different techniques like stippling, cross hatching, and pencil shading. While creating this project, I learned that I enjoy using the process of the stippling technique, as well as the outcome of it. To me, it looks like it's been printed with ink. I remember being very happy with how it was turning out as I was working on this project. I'm proud of myself for how well I was able to capture both the feeling and form of this stuffed animal. Figuring out the placement of the drawings on the page, and how to make it look balanced was a little challenging—especially figuring out the size for some of them. I’m very happy with the finished product, and I wouldn’t change anything about it.

This is my zentangle watercolor project using warm and cool colors. While creating this project, I learned that a time consuming drawing like this isn’t as hard as I thought it would be, and instead it was calming. During the process, I felt relaxed and absorbed in the drawing, and I don’t often feel like that when making art. Although it hurt my hand at times, drawing continuously in small sections was therapeutic for me. If I could change anything about it, I would make it one page instead of three small squares. This would have let me give the squid a better shape and made it look more free. I don’t think the small squares take anything away from the art though, and I think it does have a cool effect. Overall, I’m very happy with the finished product. I especially like the way the blue pops against the warm colors. The small doodles also make it look fun and interesting.

This is my primary colors sketchbook page. I was allowed to use any type of media, so I chose watercolor because it is one of my favorite mediums to work with, and I love how it looks. I used colored pencils for the “drawing from life” aspect because I wanted to give it a coloring book feel. While creating this, I learned that splattering watercolor paint by hitting the brush against my finger is not only very fun, but also makes the drawing look more interesting. During the process, I found it hard to make the blobs of watercolor look balanced, but it turned out okay in the end. I chose to draw a hoodie because I thought it would be a good way to include all of the primary colors in one drawing. My favorite thing about this sketchbook are the newspaper clips. I think they look abstract and really bring the page together. I’m satisfied with the finished product, and I would say it’s my favorite thing in my sketchbook.

Throughout this course, I got better at using mixed media, and learnt how to create finished sketchbook spreads. I also had a lot of practice with pencil shading, and learned new drawing techniques. Trying different mediums was also helpful because it gave me more ways to create art. The easiest part of this course for me were the sketchbooks. I’m a very creative person, so I found it really easy to find a direction to go in for each prompt. The hardest part of this course was the shattered value drawing. It was a lot of commitment and time, and the process was very repetitive. My perspective of art changed drastically during this course. Before the start of the school year, I only did digital art. It made me get bored with art and caused me to stop drawing. Now that this course is coming to an end, I feel encouraged to try things like watercolor, mixed media, and other techniques for drawing. This class has shown me that I can use art as a form of expression, and do many things with it other than just realism.
