What it is like to be a learner in our school?
BSM opened its doors and invited our primary parents to experience what it is like to be a learner in our school. A small group of parents took up the challenge which took place over the last two weeks on Monday morning.
Nuestro colegio abrió las puertas a las familias de Primaria para experimentar cómo es ser alumno en The British School of Málaga. Un pequeño grupo de padres aceptó el reto, que ha tenido lugar las dos últimas semanas, el lunes por la mañana.
As a learning focussed school we are looking at how each child can improve and get better. For the parents all of the activities were focussed on getting better at being able to classify animals.
Siendo como somos un colegio centrado en el aprendizaje, observamos cómo cada uno de nuestros alumnos puede mejorar y progresar.
Drawing spiders, collecting data about whether we should have pets in school, sorting animals using a variety of classifications, and matching as well as recalling animal facts were all covered in the 50 minute session. There was also plenty of evidence of our core values in action. Independence, resilience and most noticeably collaboration were demonstrated over the morning. Throughout the session parents were reminded about the importance of the process of learning as well as the skills that are developed. As to whether the group considered that they got better, well you will just have to ask them.
Dibujar arañas, recopilar información en referencia a si deberíamos tener mascotas en el colegio, clasificar animales usando distintas categorías y tanto emparejar como recordar datos sobre animales fueron temas que se trataron en la sesión de 50 minutos. También hubo muestras de nuestros valores centrales. Independencia, resiliencia y, la más destacada, colaboración se pusieron en práctica durante la mañana. En la sesión se recordó a los padres la importancia del proceso de aprendizaje y las habilidades que se desarrollan. En cuanto a si el grupo considera que ha mejorado, tendremos que pedirles que les pregunten ustedes mismos.

Cricket
In Year 3 and Year 4 this term one of the units that the students will cover in PE is Cricket. Kwik Cricket is a modified version of the sport aimed at encouraging more young people to get involved and enjoy playing the game. In just 4 weeks the students are playing mini versions of the game that develop the key skills of bowling, fielding and batting. To complete the unit they will take part in an Inter house competition over the next two weeks.
En Year 3 y Year 4 una de las unidades que se cubren en la asignatura de PE este trimestre es el cricket. El Kwik Cricket es una versión modificada de este deporte, que tiene el objetivo de animar a más gente joven a jugar y que disfruten de este deporte. En sólo 4 semanas los alumnos están jugando un mini versión del cricket que desarrolla las capacidades clave de lanzamiento, defender y batear. Para completar la unidad, van a participar en una competición de las casas en las dos próximas semanas.

When I took the photograph I was planning on using it to show collaboration across different age groups in our school. I am also interested in child led learning and considered this to be an example that I would like to discuss with Rachel Evans, (Head of EYFS). · Cuando hice la foto pensaba usarla para mostrar la colaboración entre distintos grupos de edad dentro del colegio. También me interesa mucho el aprendizaje dirigido por los propios alumnos y creí que esto es un ejemplo de lo que podría tratar con Rachel Evans, nuestra Coordinadora de Infantil.
The Y9 students, who come into support Y1 every Wednesday during their lunch time, were given the same opportunity as the Y1 students. Choose an activity and work collaboratively. No worksheet and no predetermined outcome. This was by far the best lesson I had experienced with the Year 1 class. Only 2 students went to the bathroom in the 2 hour slot, only a couple of low level behaviour incidents to deal with and the students were all engaged. · A los alumnos de Year 9, que ayudan a Year 1 todos los Miércoles durante su hora del almuerzo, les dimos la misma oportunidad que a los alumnos de Year 1. Pudieron elegir una actividad y trabajar de forma colaborativa. No había una hoja de instrucciones ni un resultado predeterminado. Y ésta ha sido, de lejos, la mejor clase que he visto con los niños de Year 1. Sólo 2 niños fueron al baño en un periodo de 2 horas, sólo un par de incidentes leves de comportamiento. Todos los alumnos estaban muy involucrados.
This however, was not the Eureka moment. The teacher led activity that I had planned was visited by 12 students across the afternoon. At no point did I stop a child from what they were doing and only worked with a child or children when they came over to take part. At the end of the 2 hours I have to admit I was feeling really pleased with how the session had gone. It was not until the journey home though that I felt the real Eureka moment. Bethany told me that whilst she was sorting the animals, sorry I mean classifying animals, it was a science lesson after all, she was listening to Susu Year 9 and Isabella Year 1. · Sin embargo, éste no fue el momento estelar. Un total de 12 alumnos visitaron la actividad docente que yo tenía planificada. En ningún momento interrumpí lo que estaban haciendo los niños y sólo estuve trabajando con los niños cuando vinieron a mí para participar. Al término de las 2 horas, tengo que admitir que me sentí muy satisfecho con la dinámica de la sesión. Pero no fue hasta el momento en el que iba conduciendo a casa cuando sentí el "momento eureka". Bethany, mi hija, me dijo que cuando estaban ordenando animales (quiero decir clasificando animales), algo que constituye una clase de Ciencias en definitiva, estaba escuchando a las alumnas Susu (de Year 9) e Isabella (de Year 1).

Why don't the animals that can´t stand up work together to help each other to stand up? · ¿Por qué los animales que no se tienen de pie no se ayudan los unos a los otros para mantenerse firmes?

Isabella then linked the necks of 2 giraffes that could not stand up, as they only had 2 legs, to make 4 legs so that they could support each other. Eventually all the giraffes were standing up. As they were not put away afterwards I guess we could use this as evidence of BSM students literally thinking outside of the box!
Isabella unió los cuellos de 2 jirafas que no se mantenían en pie, ya que sólo tenían 2 patas, para hacer que hubiera 4 patas y unas sujetaran a las otras. Al final, todas las jirafas se quedaban de pie. Como no las apartaron, creo que podríamos usar este caso como una prueba de que los alumnos de BSM tienen pensamiento lateral.
London Media Trip · Viaje de Media a Londres
Our Media students have enjoyed a study trip to London, a great opportunity to broaden their horizons and learn directly from professionals. The students have visited the London Film Academy to take part in a filming workshop; have learnt about film certification in a tour of The British Board of Film Classification; they have seen a film in the BFI IMAX cinema and they have learnt about the history of marketing during a visit to the Museum of Brands. Aside from all of that they have also enjoyed the tourist attractions of this great city. An amazing and exciting programme that will have been an unforgettable experience!
Los alumnos de Media han disfrutado de un viaje de estudios a Londres, una oportunidad para ampliar horizontes y aprender directamente de profesionales. Los alumnos han visitado esta semana la London Film Academy para realizar un taller de rodaje; han aprendido sobre certificación cinematográfica en un tour por The British Board of Film Classification; han visto una película en el cine BFI IMAX y han aprendido sobre la historia del marketing en una visita al Museum of Brands. Además, han disfrutado de los atractivos turísticos de la gran ciudad. ¡Un programa condensado y electrizante que no van olvidar!
Science Support Sessions
The Science Department has set up a busy timetable of support classes for Year 10 and Year 11 students, all outside of normal lesson time (early in the morning and at lunch time). The sessions have been well received by the students who have been very interested in attending the classes. We hope that they make the most of this magnificent initiative, thought up by Mr Jiménez, Mr Jordens, Mr Hancock, Mr Williams and Mrs Valentine.
El Departamento de Ciencias ha establecido una completa agenda de clases de apoyo para los alumnos de Year 10 y Year 11, todas ellas en horario extraordinario (por la mañana temprano y a la hora de la comida). Las sesiones han tenido una gran acogida por parte de los alumnos, que están asistiendo con interés. Esperamos que saquen todo el provecho de esta magnífica iniciativa planteada por Mr Jiménez, Mr Jordens, Mr Hancock, Mr Williams y Mrs Valentine.
Year 9 Options Meeting · Optativas para alumnos de Year 9
Year 9 students attended a Subject Fair last Wednesday 5th February in order to start familiarising themselves with the options available from Year 10. The idea of the event is to get to know first-hand the courses, teachers and other students who have studied each subject and to have realistic expectations about professional and academic opportunities. The subjects represented at the event were: ICT, Music, PE, Media Studies, History, Geography, Art, Business Studies y Drama.
Los alumnos de Year 9 asistieron a una Feria de Asignaturas el pasado Miércoles 5 de Febrero, para que empiecen a familiarizarse y conocer las optativas disponibles a partir de Year 10. La idea de este evento es que conozcan de primera mano las programaciones, los profesores, a otros alumnos que han cursado esas asignaturas y que tengan expectativas realistas sobre salidas académicas y profesionales. Los cursos que se presentaron fueron ICT, Music, PE, Media Studies, History, Geography, Art, Business Studies y Drama.
Summer School Claremont
Our sister school Claremont has sent us some information about their summer camp which will take place in July and August. The summer camps are every two weeks and the deadline for application is the 30th March. The programme director is Vaida Andrijauskaiti. We have our 4 house days coming up, each containing events that will promote the core values of the school and raise money for the school´s charities. · En las próximas semanas se avecinan 4 Días de las Casas y en cada uno de ellos se celebran eventos que promocionarán los Valores del colegio y servirán para recaudar fondos para las ongs con las que colabora el colegio.

Students from ALL houses are welcome to participate in each event even if it is a different house to theirs. But only students in that house can come dressed in house colours on any particular house day. For example, on February 14th, only fire students can come dressed in something red. · Todos los alumnos de TODAS las casas están invitados a participar en todos los eventos, incluso si no es el día de su casa. Pero sólo los alumnos de la casa que se celebra podrán venir vestidos con el color de su casa o la camiseta de su casa. Brothers Lucas, Mathias and Niko M.D have been awarded three first prizes in their respective categories of piano and cello in the National German Youth Competition “Jugend musiziert”. Congratulations to all three of them for this fantastic achievement!
Los hermanos Lucas, Mathias y Niko M.D. han sido galardonados en el Concurso Nacional Juvenil Alemán "Jugend musiziert" con tres primeros premios en sus respectivas categorías en los instrumentos de piano y violoncello. ¡Damos nuestra enhorabuena a los tres por este gran esfuerzo!
Carnival and Day of Andalucia in Foundation · Carnaval & Día de Andalucía en Infantil
The children in Foundation are going to have a very exciting day on Friday 21st February, as they are celebrating Carnival and also the Day of Andalucia with the Spanish department. The carnival will be celebrated with music, dancing and masks. We encourage all the children to come in dressed up, they can choose to wear either typical Andalusian dress or dress up as a character from their favourite story or nursery rhyme (Nursery students) or their favourite superhero (Reception). What fun!
Los niños de Infantil van a tener un día de grandes emociones el próximo Viernes 21 de Febrero, ya que celebran el Carnaval y también el Día de Andalucía con el Departamento de Español. El carnaval se festejará con música, bailes y máscaras. Animamos a todos los niños a que vengan disfrazados; pueden elegir si vestirse con trajes típicos andaluces o bien un personaje de cuento o su “Nursery Rhyme” favorito (en Nursery) o el superhéroe que más le guste (en Reception). ¡A divertirse!

Story Time at BSM · Cuentacuentos en BSM
This year we have launched a new initiative that we are really excited about. Our assistant Jo Woods is busy recording and editing a series of stories which are going to be told by our teachers and members of staff, in native English and with all the charm of a traditional storytelling. So when the children are going to bed, travelling in the car, or they simply want to enjoy a good story, you will be able to play the video or listen to the audio once, twice, or as many times as they want. February: Miss Nicky, Monkey Puzzle.
Este año hemos inaugurado una nueva iniciativa que nos hace especial ilusión. Nuestra assistant Jo Woods se está encargando de grabar en vídeo y de editar una serie de cuentos relatados por nuestros profesores y miembros de la plantilla, en inglés nativo y con todo el encanto de los cuentacuentos. Así, cuando los niños se vayan a acostar, viajen en coche o quieran simplemente disfrutar de una buena historia, podrán reproducirla en vídeo o en audio una... o tantas veces como deseen. From January the school uniform shop will be open on the following days: MONDAYS and WEDNESDAYS from 9.10 to 10 am and TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS from 4.10 to 5 pm.
La tienda de uniformes estará abierta a partir de este mes de Enero en el siguiente horario: LUNES y MIÉRCOLES de 9:10 a 10:00 horas & MARTES y JUEVES de 16:10 a 17:00 horas.
