Sleepless in Seattle Where I am from by Marlee Bennett

While the 1993 film, Sleepless in Seattle, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, is a touching love story, it does not accurately portray all that Seattle has to offer. While it shows a few key locations in the city, the geography is all wrong! Let me take you on a better tour of the Emerald City.

Downtown

Downtown Seattle is surrounded by water, full of life, and has countless spots for adventure. The city is home to the Seattle Seahawks, which is one of the loudest fan stadiums in the NFL. Also, Downtown you can visit the space needle, go to the top of the Columbia Tower, ride the great wheel, visit the aquarium, Pike Place, and the gum wall. It is all easily walkable but wear some good shoes because the area is full of hills. In 1962, nearly 10 million people visited the Seatte World's Fair. One of the performers, was my grandmother, Maggie Bennett. She has preformed nearly every year since at the annual folk music festival.

The Water

Seattle is surrounded by water, both fresh lake water and salty Puget Sound. You can cross into Lake Washington and Lake Union from the Puget Sound via the Ballard Locks. I spy Marlee on the ferry photo :)

The Mountains

One hour away from the city are the Snoqualmie Mountains. Here you can ski in the winter and hike in the summer.

West Seattle

I was raised about 15 minutes outside of the city in West Seattle. West Seattle is home to local attractions Alki beach, Lincoln Park, the Junction, and tons of cute coffee shops, bookstores, and music stores.

Seattle really has all you can ask for, there is beautiful scenery, all four seasons, bodies of water, one-hour trips to the mountains, and lots of cute places to visit. I am so thankful to have grown up in such a wonderful spot.
