Photography 2 portfolio GEORGIA GIANOPULOS | SPRING 2023

My name is Georgia Gianopulos. I took Digital Photography 2 as a class my spring semester at Strath Haven High School. I took the class because out of all the art classes I've taken at Haven, photography has stuck with me the most. The art form has been a gate to expressing my emotions, my creativity, my opinions, and my love for the craft.

I have always been a huge arts person, wether its performing, musical, or 2D. This class has been more than welcoming to not just me, but as well to other students, to freely create pieces expressing themselves. As an artist, the only challenge I had was being able to scale down my ideas into things I could realistically execute (for example, being able to light fire in the studio... you can't).

Enjoy my work, and feel free to take as many details your eyes may see, and welcome any emotions my pieces may bring to your heart. <3

Haven vs. Unionville, JV Men's lacrosse: I took this outside the given class time. I chose a bunch of these pictures because of the strong, sharp focus and really good capturing of movement. The vibrancy is very strong in these images, which is something I have been working on in editing. My biggest focus during this game was to get strong close-ups of people, and I think I nailed it.
Haven vs Marple Newtown, Varsity Men's Lacrosse: this was an anxiety-inducing shot. I was very scared of the players and the coach, but I talked to the coach before the huddle and he was very very lovely. I think the angle on this shot is very interesting, and it is something very common that you wouldn't see in this perspective.
Dance Haven: I am obsessed with the symmetry in this image. The lighting in the auditorium was very hard to shoot in because of the lighting contrast, which made it very difficult to get good good details without over/under exposure.
Dance Haven: this series of images was from one performance. Here, I focused on dancers' features and details while dancing. I have always found capturing movement beautiful and intriguing. The lighting was a little easier to take pictures in, and I think they turned out nice.
Haven vs. Conestoga, Girl's Swimming: I have swam for eleven years of my life. I only joined the school swim team for two years, but that team felt like a family. I love water (later shown in a project I did) and I think I did a good job capturing the sport and the energy of the team.
Portrait Project 1 (A Study of Human Features): Before this project, I had never done portrait photography. The only things I knew were that you needed a subject, and a camera that would capture fine details. The subject, Imogen, is my best friend. I used her personality and chose a prop that would fit with her to make the image more personal. I did really well with this project in adding a sense of each of my friend's personalities, and I really enjoy the sharpness of all of their features.
Portrait Project 1 (A Study of Human Features): This was a really fun one to do. I had people draw all over Kaitlin's face (she loved it) because she is one of the most bubbly, outgoing souls I have ever met. I set up this. shot with two studio lights and a black backdrop.
Portrait Project 1 (A Study of Human Features): These are the rest of the final images from this project. the bottom left is a self portrait - my first ever attempting to do self portrait photography. It took about an hour of playing guessing games to get a total of six in-focus images, but something that photography has taught me is patience is necessary for success.
Haven vs. Penncrest, JV and Varsity Girl's Field Hockey: these were taken in the beginning of the 2022 fall. I was very pleased with them then, as I thought they would be my best work (little did I know I would become so much better over the course of a year). The bottom right image was awarded on multiple occasions.
Portrait Project 2 (A Focus on Water): This was for the second project of our spring semester final - I had loved doing portrait photography for the first project, and I wanted to incorporate something really cool and fun and something that I enjoyed. The subject here is my friend Sydney. Sydney is a D1 swimmer who attends University of Pennsylvania.
Portrait Project 2 (A Focus on Water): The subject is Taylor. This shot was surprisingly difficult because of the water reflections bouncing back into the lens and creating lens flare. I was also standing in the water with the camera, so I was praying and not moving so the camera wouldn't fall and forever be broken. We had ventured into a creek near my house, and despite all the slippery rocks and bugs, I didn't drop the camera! (My teacher would have killed me).
Portrait Project 2 (A Focus on Water): these are some of the other final shots I took for this piece. I loved capturing my friend's reactions to being splashed, and I loved having such a support system for my photography.
Portrait Project 2 (A Focus on Water): The last shot is a picture of my friend Mary. I adore this photo because of the texture on her skin and in her eye, and I love how the blue of her eye is so bright and vibrant that it compliments the neutralness of her skin tone and hair color.
Dance Haven: I was very proud of this photo. The detail are clear, and the expression on the subject is very calm. This was taken in the middle of the performance, and I am obsessed with the way I was able to capture such a clear shot of Claire in her element.
Dance Haven: the subject is Emma. Emma performed this solo dance for International Day, as well as the Spring Dance Haven recital. This is my favorite dance out of the whole set of performances. Emma and her choice of flowy clothes really helped emphasize movement of her rhythm. This batch of pictures was also the first time I ever tried the denoise AI in Lightroom Classic. I definitely recommend if you take pictures in low light.
Junior Prom: Junior Prom this year was very rainy, so everything was insides; so people decided to start playing Heads Up waiting for their dinners. I love this image because it really captures the people trying to explain what the card is (in this case, "Cheesecake" was the given word), and you can see the happy and confused look on the person who is trying to guess that correct word.
Junior Prom: The subjects here are Brianne and Lola. This was my first time ever using flash, and although I had difficulty with it (it wouldn't go off every picture I took), I had a lot of fun and it works super well at capturing sharpness and details in low light.
Varsity Boy's Wrestling: I wish I got into taking pictures for wrestling earlier. it is so fun watching people try to pin each other down, and it is great because I also had front row seating. I love the expression of concentration on all of the wrestler's faces.
Mock Car Crash: my high school, every year before Junior Prom, holds a "mock car crash" performance in awareness of drunk driving. I was very happy with the reaction shots; I didn't even look at the people pulling the tarp off of the "dead" body, and I kept my focus still as I jumped from person to person, trying to capture raw reactions to the scene.
Stickball: A new Haven tradition started this year; stickball. Stickball is like baseball, but with a huge stick found on school property. This shot was the leader of Stickball passing on the stickball legacy to a Junior, to keep the tradition flowing.
Stickball: I love this image because you can see the dust as it comes up off of the ground after the batting stick is thrown. The subject, Sammy, runs towards first base. I adore how sharp he is, and I like that the bushes behind him aren't in focus but aren't so blurry that you can't even see the outlines of each leaf.
