Jack Lescure, 1922 - 1993 WWII Veteran, Always remember the sacrifices ...

Beaded tapestries are my “thing”. Many years ago, I combined this talent with my deep interest in WWII and created the Thankful Generations Project to honor those who have served in the military, to show respect for those who currently serve, and to thank them and their families for their many sacrifices.

My way of expressing this gratitude is through the creation of beaded tapestries based on vintage photographs provided to me by family members. To the family of Jack Lescure, I thank you for entrusting me with his photograph - it is an honor to present his finished tapestry for others to see, remember, and show respect.

Creating a tapestry takes many hours of planning and effort ... from working with the photograph to ensure a workable bead pattern can be generated, to making bead color selections and ordering materials, to setting up the loom with warp threads ... all before a single bead can be added!

Brief Military Service History

Jack Lescure served in the US Naval Reserve, first in Washington DC and then as an aviation cadet in Athens, GA and Pensacola FL in 1942-43. After flight school he was assigned to Marine bombing squadron 614 (VMB-614) as 2nd Lieutenant. VMB-614 trained at various bases throughout out South until being shipped overseas in August 45 and arrived in Midway Islands. They flew sub patrol and local flights delivering mail and supplies. Plane they flew was Mitchell PBJ. Later in the year they flew out of Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Guam. Again mostly local flights. They came back to US in early 46. Were stationed in CA at a base in San Francisco. He was detached from the service in May 1946 with a rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was later promoted to Captain in 3/51 while he was in USMC reserves.

TIMELINE:

  • October 2020: Jack’s daughter, Jeannine, contacted me about the possibility of commemorating her father with a beaded tapestry.
  • November 14, 2020: Using Apple iPhoto and BeadTool4 softwares, I was able to transpose her vintage photograph into a workable bead pattern. This process took approximately 5 hours of photo editing and working within the bead pattern software to produce a great composition.
  • November 25, 2020: Warp threads added to my Little Guy Mirrix Loom.
  • December 25, 2020: First 15 rows added.
  • January 26, 2021: all 125 rows completed. At ~15 minutes per row, that equates to a little over 30 hours of beading.
  • March 13, 2021: all rows, top and bottom tabs finished. Creating the tabs on bottom and top add another 15 hours of work.

There you have it, 21,624 beads fashioned into the likeness of Jack Lescure, WWII Veteran. May he Rest In Peace and remain in our collective hearts and memories.
