Narragansett Indian Youth Ambassadors July 2016 NEWSLETTER

Planting The Seeds for a healthier community 🌱

Welcome to NIYA. The Narragansett Indian Youth Ambassadors are a core group of Native American youth between the ages of 11-19, who want to make a positive difference in our tribal and local communities through our actions. Working together to keep our traditions and culture alive, to establish youth, family and community events along with fundraising for educational trips and cultural activities. As youth ambassadors and mentors we uphold a sober standard of wellbeing as a representative, agent and steward of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. Our commitment is to stay drug and alcohol free, and make our community stronger for the next seven generations and beyond.

The goal of the Narragansett Indian Youth Ambassadors (NIYA) is to create an active network of informed and concerned tribal youth citizens to guide the future of their communities. Working and learning together, participants enhance their leadership skills while broadening their knowledge of self identity through culture and community issues. NIYA encourages our youth to become trustees of their communities and leadership resources as they work together for the common good. NIYA will work together to establish an active youth community, plan events, and assist with fundraising to raise money for trips and activities; striving to incorporate culture and tradition into all activities.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support and interest in this initiative. If you have any questions or concerns, or you would like to become involved in our youth group please feel free to contact me.

Yours,

How do we fight back against drug and alcohol abuse?

Use tradition as prevention, don't give into peer pressure, rise above the influence.

Red Road to Recovery is an open discussion AA meeting hosted and founded by a recovering tribal member. Held weekly on Wednesday evenings 7:00-8:00pm at our tribal Four Winds Community Center located at 4477 South County Trail (building in back on right hand side as you pull in) Charlestown, RI 02813. The meetings are open to the general public.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available to you 24/7! Don't be afraid to ask for help!

Don't give up hope;

Do you know how many cigarettes = a one hour hookah session?

Hint: it's more cigs than come in a single pack.....

100! That’s a crazy high number, especially since some people want us to believe that smoking hookah is better for you than smoking cigarettes. We were pretty surprised to learn what’s up with hookah and the toxic carcinogens, tar, and METALS that — despite popular belief — hookah water does not filter out.
