Behind The Rainbow The making of a project by Steven Wood-Matthews Medical Photographer

It starts with an idea...

The project.

• As an NHS Medical Photographer, I thought it my duty to document the PPE used to protect everyone from COVID-19.
• I wanted to make it colourful to represent the rainbow used as a symbol of support, hope and solidarity across the nation during this time.

Then a plan of action...

The location.

• I used a studio to control the colours and to take staff out of their usual working environment.
• This would also guarantee continuity in visual style across the project.

Getting started...

The equipment.

• Camera, lenses, lighting modifiers, tripod, laptop, PPE, willing assistant!

Bringing it all together...

The shoot.

• After booking times and dates with staff and planning the equipment...
...it's time to get creative!

It's all in the technique...

The details.

• Coloured gels projected on white background and used with directional light to add colour to subject and PPE.
• Lights and exposure set for narrow depth of field to create emotion and to engage with the subject.

This all leads to...

The result.

• The project is presented.

And finally...

• Behind the Rainbow won Bronze in the 2021 Institute of Medical Illustrators Awards.
Thank you to all who took part for giving your time and help to achieve this project.
