EYFS
Hello F1!
Well, we cannot believe that we have finished our learning journey for another year! We are so incredibly proud of you all and the amazing progress you have made.
We have taken part in some wonderful learning this year; here are some of our favourites : The colour monster where we developed all our PSE skills to support colour monster regulate his feelings and make friends.
Alien’s love underpants, when we saved our underpants from being stolen and helped Miss Waring count them into the wash basket!
Way back home- here we used our physical skills to design plans and build rockets. We also extended our language to talk about our world.
We also enjoyed some traditional tales using our phonics and reading skills to retell parts of the stories! We enjoyed acting them out!
We enjoyed exploring our provision especially painting and creating, small world and our outdoor area where we have developed our friendships and built our confidence ready for our next journey in school! All of your teachers are so incredibly amazed by your learning journey, and we cannot wait to see how you shine next year.
For all the children graduating to FS2 – we wish you the best of luck for your new class. For all of you who are staying in nursery, have a lovely summer and we will see you in September!
F2
Wow, another school year has ended and what a fabulous one we have had!
Firstly, I would like to say an enormous well done to our children in Early Years who have worked so hard to reach their goals within this year. We have been honoured to be your teachers this year and you have made us so proud!
Next, I would like to thank parents/guardians for your continued support and dedication! It has really been appreciated and myself and Miss Halford look forward to working alongside you again next year!
We have covered some amazing topics this year that have engaged and inspired children to learn and achieve. Some of our favourites were:
In Autumn we met the colour monster and helped him to settle into school- just as the children did! We developed our PSE and communication skills to help us get ready for the amazing learning we would be doing!
We also helped save school from the Evil Pea. We used our phonics skills to write descriptions to help capture him. I hope he is still locked in the freezer!
In spring we became budding artists and helped save the stars in the sky, after one was stolen! We created our own starry night paintings and held an Art gallery opening for our parents! We practised colour mixing and using different tools.
We also attended space school to become astronaut helpers! We had to carry out some difficult tasks including walking on the moon and eating floating food! We especially enjoyed laughing at our teachers during this task! We wrote a special report to help us remember all our tasks!
Finally, we looked at animals around the world – here we explored animals in different habitats including under the sea. Here, we used our vocabulary about the natural world.
In summer, we enjoyed our wonderful school trip to The Deep and helped our planet to recycle! My favourite memory is the excitement in the water tunnel as a swordfish came to say hi!
We also celebrated the Queen's Jubilee this year and this helped us develop our skills and vocabulary in past and present tense. We used chronology when looking at the timeline of the Queen and we also applied this to where we live - Looking at the past of Grimethorpe!
Finally, our last topic this year has been around plants, and we read a funny story called ‘’Jack and the incredibly mean stalk’’ We received a call from PC Baz explaining that he had found giant footprints! We had to use our detective skills to work out who it was! We used our fantastic maths skills to measure and record numbers.
We have had some wonderful memories F2, in fact too many to mention but there has been plenty of learning, fun and laughter and this year would not have been the same without every single one of you! You are all ready to take the next step into ‘’big school’’ and we are so lucky you we get to continue this journey with you! Keep shining, keep learning and we look forward to teaching you all again in Key stage one! Mrs Critchley, Miss Halford and the amazing team in EYFS...
Year 1
Year 1, it has been an amazing year! It has been a pleasure to see how much you have all enjoyed learning and how much you have progressed this year. We have covered some fabulous topics, including looking at the work of George Seurat in art and reproducing our own paintings in his style, learning all about how to use the internet and ensuring we know how to be safe online, learning all about The Great Fire of London (a firm favourite with you all!), and last but not least, learning new skills and using tools to make our own wooden planter.
Your writing progress has been amazing and many of you are now writing independently, using your phonic knowledge and correct punctuation. Lots of you also passed your phonics test this term, so your reading has also improved. Many of you are now reading for pleasure and enjoying sharing stories with each other. Your maths knowledge has grown lots too and now many of you know a lot about money and time, which are really important life skills.
We all enjoyed learning about our 5 senses and had fun smelling and tasting lots of different things in our science topic at the beginning of the year. We have learned about plant and trees that grow in our environment and learned how to grow them from seeds by planting and caring for our own. It has been lovely to see photos from some of you showing how your seeds have grown into healthy plants and flowers. We now also know lots about the different seasons, how the weather changes and how the length of the days change too. You loved discovering lots of signs of spring on one of our nature walks around the school grounds.
Sports Day was amazing for you all and we were so proud that all of you took part and showed such resilience. It has been so good to see how much your self-confidence has increased and you were all able to show your skills in front of lots of grown-ups.
The newest member of our class, Sid the Sloth, has had a fabulous time coming home with you and sharing all your adventures. I think he will need a long rest over the summer holidays after all the fun he has had with you!
From making chocolate cornflake buns to making clay divas in RE, your year has been one of tremendous growth - both academically and personally. It has been a pleasure to spend this year with you and watch you achieve such amazing things. Well done to each and every one of you - keep up your amazing attitude to learning as you move into year 2!
Mrs Burnett, Mr Poxton, Miss Tooley & Mr Smee
Year 1/2
My first year as a teacher at Milefield Primary School has certainly been one to remember; with some fantastic memories made throughout a variety of topics!
Autumn 1 - Our first half term started out with an umbrella hook in literacy and a letter from the queen in curriculum. Making cross curricular links we learnt lots of Geography skills to not only support her royal highness in making an important decision but also to learn lots about where penguins come from (Lost & Found). In curriculum, after multiple weeks of gathering more information, including continents, oceans, human & physical features and using an atlas; we held a debate to decide whether the queen should reside in Tocuaro or Grimethorpe! Though initially everyone of course voted for Grimethorpe, with biased terms, we did, in the end, decide that Grimethorpe would perhaps better suited than Tocuaro for multiple reasons!
Autumn 2 - Wow, did we have fun in autumn 2, starting off in topic with a dinosaur bone discovery out in our local woods! Though in this instance, we did not find literacy links in our learning we did however make ties in maths, where we compared and measured dinosaur footprints and did division with dinosaur bones! During our history lessons, we learnt lots of fascinating information about the life of Mary Anning; I’m certain each of you can remember the significant events which happened over the course of her life.
Spring 1 - In spring, we had lots of enjoyment exploring the artwork of Annie Morris and multiple other sculptures. Kick starting our learning with a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and creating a mood board to inspire our future artwork. Over the course of the half term we practised multiple skills including: rolling, shaping, cutting and creating surface patterns! Lots of us took great pride in displaying our artwork in our very own Milefield’s Art Gallery, which parents and carers were encouraged to come and visit.
Spring 2 - E-Safety experts by name and e-safety experts by nature! Who knew the internet can be so risky if you’re unaware of the dangers? After a letter from Mrs Critchley asking for advice, we soon realised we needed to create an information packed video to inform the children in Foundation Stage about how to stay safe on the internet. All children produced a brilliant iMovie in pairs, whereby they added text, images and videos to make their informative videos eye catching and engaging.
Summer 1 - The Great Fire of London! Arriving back to class from lunch to a burning scene, full of the smell of burnt wood and freshly baked bread was a great hook into our new topic of learning. After listening to stories and exploring different sources of information we soon learnt lots of information about the great fire of London and the consequences of the disaster. My favourite part was the visit from our local fire services!
Summer 2 - An invitation to Milefield’s Miniature Soap Box Race 2022 was a fabulous driver for our final topic of the year. All children have fully immersed themselves into creating a wooden moving vehicle this term, each unique and inspired by a variety of vehicles from both our own past experiences and of course our trip to the South Yorkshire transport museum. I can’t wait to see our vehicles and hard work in action soon. Not to forgetr our link to literacy whereby we have wrote a recount of our trip to encourage other children to visit the attraction in the future.
Thank you for an excellent year, I will miss each of your unique personalities. I can’t wait to see your continued progress, don’t forget to say hello in the corridor.
Love, Miss Greasley
Year 2
We really have had a wonderful year together in class 2! I have absolutely loved teaching and getting to know every single one of the children and the progress they have made is just outstanding. The hard work and preparation the children put into their SATs really shone through in their results - I couldn’t be prouder!
This year we have enjoyed lots of exciting learning together and been on some fun and memorable school trips. We kicked off the school year with our ‘Amazing Africa’ topic and visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park as part of this topic. I know the children loved learning more about this continent and the animals you find there, as did I. In Autumn 2, the children enjoyed learning about the ‘Gunpowder plot’ and finding out the true meaning of bonfire night.
In the Spring term, the children displayed their amazing art skills through our ‘ready, steady, sculpt’. As part of this learning, they enjoyed another fabulous trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. After seeing the amazing sculptures they produced, I definitely think we have some future artists in our class! In Spring 2, the children then displayed their amazing ICT skills and became e-safety experts. The videos they created for the children in Early Years were so creative and informative!
In Summer 1, the children loved learning about Rosa Parks and the significance of her actions in the past. We created some amazing posters about her and shared these with the rest of the class. This half term they have been very busy creating their very own moving vehicles for our ‘Milefield’s soapbox race’ topic. I am so excited to put these to the test and show off their wonderful creations.
I hope that the children all have a wonderful, well-deserved break over summer, and I look forward to hearing about more of their achievements as they move into year 3!
Miss Corradini
Year 3
Year 3, the school year, and our journey together has sadly come to an end, but I am really proud of each and every one of you. You have shown lots of interest in our topics this year and I am impressed with how much you know and have remembered.
We kicked off the year learning about the Prehistoric Times including the Stone Age people and their settlements. We had a great experience on the visit to Herd Farm and learnt about the tools they used, their homes and how they hunted for their own food.
We looked at physical and human features in Geography including rivers; with a focus on Natural Disasters caused by flooding and hurricanes. I really wish we would have had longer on this topic because you were all hooked.
Art was a definite winner this year, and the gallery which showcased your work was a success. Your Picasso pictures showed lots of surrealism and cubism using the skills you had been taught for drawing and painting. I was impressed with your imaginations in your final pieces.
You are all WizKids with the iPad and the games you made using Scratch were really good. I can’t believe how well you did producing algorithms and debugging your games to run smoothly and without a hitch.
You were keen to find out about Henry VIII and what happened to his wives during his reign. We had some good responses when we did Conscience Alley about whether he was a good man or not. You really played your roles well during our Tudor feast and I saw some real kindness that day.
We saved the best while last with our Pinball Games in DT. You all demonstrated great saw cutting ability and were very supportive of one another. I know this topic appealed to many of you as it was very practical.
Enjoy your summer and I know there will be lots of fun learning to be had next year.
Miss Gillespie
Year 3/4
Wow! A year has passed and it has been an absolute pleasure to teach Class 3/4 this year. They are amazing and so hard-working. The children have enjoyed rating their topics this year and it has been really pleasing for all children to score the topics so high – thank you!
In the Autumn one term, the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Vikings and their beliefs. They were really engaged when researching Valhalla. Following this, Class 3/4 rated the next topic, Geography, slightly higher. Children enjoyed applying their geographical skills and thoroughly enjoyed using their compass point map skills to locate items on the school grounds. I think the highlight of the topic was the trip to Knowsley Safari Park whereby we got to see Lions directly outside our coach.
During the Spring one period, all children were engaged in the topic ‘Picasso’ and created their own portraits in the style of Picasso. These were then displayed as part of the art display for parents. I am pleased to say that , yet again, this topic scored a high score. In Spring 2, children were very engaged in ICT when they programmed their own ‘Space Invader’ style games using Scratch.
For me personally, the best topic was in Summer 1. Myself and the children thoroughly enjoyed researching Henry VIII and his wives as part of the topic, ‘Off With Her Head’. I think the highlight was the hook day where by children had to read riddles and locate clues around the school grounds. I will never forget Nicolas when he found a ‘chopped off head’ (Toy head). We are currently enjoying DT and have loved using saws when making and constructing our own ‘Pinball’ style games.
Year 4
I can’t believe that it has been a year! What a year it has been! My very own first class, Class 4, have been amazing and it has been wonderful to see all their developments throughout the year. Progression has been made throughout, along with some fantastic memories of the amazing work they have produced. It has been a pleasure teaching them as they are very talented and extremely hard-working. The children have engaged well with the topics this year, and this is due to their passion to extend their knowledge of interesting and fun topics.
In the Autumn one term, the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Vikings and their beliefs. We began with a scenario where Mr Branigan’s class was at war with ourselves. Children were hooked in straight away (Not sure why they wanted a war versus Mr Branigan so much!) and this was shown through their engagement. We then progressed onto researching Valhalla and looking at Thor. The children enjoyed it so much, we decided to use this as a driver for some excellent writing pieces within Literacy. Following this, Class 4 used their geographical skills in the next topic. Children enjoyed applying their understanding of human and physical features to Knowsley Safari Park. We began by understanding key terminology and then used our compass point map skills to locate items on the school grounds to demonstrate understanding of maps. We analysed what makes a suitable location for a zoo, before then visiting the safari park. Here the children were very excited as lions came very close to the coach! Following this, students worked in teams to present their findings and explain to the class why the Safari Park should relocate to somewhere local.
During the first Spring term, all children were engaged in the topic ‘Picasso’ and created their own portraits in the style of Picasso. We built upon our skills of sketching and painting and these all led into the final application. Students were able to choose their own colours for the panting to create effect, just as Picasso did during his different periods. These were then displayed as part of the art gallery for parents. Once again, due to the high levels of engagement, we used Picasso as a driver for a non-chronological report in Literacy.
In Spring 2, children were very engaged in ICT when they programmed their own ‘Space Invader’ style games using Scratch. Children overcame many difficulties and challenges, such as not having a keyboard, by programming their own control system onto the Ipad. These came out very well and meant the students could play their very own game.
In Summer term 1, myself and the children thoroughly enjoyed researching Henry VIII and his wives as part of the topic, ‘Off With Her Head’. To engage students, we had riddles around the school, and we needed to go and locate these which would provide us with additional clues. The students were really engaged in this, and we even found a head that had been chopped off! Gruesome!
This led into lots of questions and some wild theories of what had occurred. Eventually we pieced it all together to understand it was King Henry VIII's fault. Within this topic, we analysed the rich and the poor during Tudor times. This meant we had a feast. I will never forget some of the faces when they entered the classroom to a homemade soup with bread by Mrs Roystone.
Whilst half of the class had this, the rest enjoyed fresh treats. The looks on some of the faces really mirrored how some people would have felt during these times. Luckily, Class 4 are really kind, so they shared their luxuries with those who were less fortunate. In our final topic of Summer 2, we are currently enjoying DT and have loved using saws when making and constructing our own ‘Pinball’ style games. Some children had not heard of pinball machines, so we decided to have some time playing with handheld pinball games and some which are online (Don’t tell Mrs Trickett we played games!).
Once this understanding was there, we learnt how to use equipment safely. We all passed our induction and could begin to measure and cut through various pieces of wood before joining these to our pinball machines. With their own personalised playing fields, it has been a great topic to end this fantastic year on. It is something they can cherish along with the fantastic memories that we have created throughout the year.
Year 5
A year of being in Year 5 unfortunately comes to an end and what a year it has been! Year 5 have proved they are authors, mathematicians, readers, scientists, historians, hikers, artists and much more (You have blown my socks off!). You have worked so hard and made so much progress and I am so proud - I can’t wait to see how amazing you all are in your final year of primary school.
Autumn term saw Year 5 exploring Langsett and gathering a breadth of geographical knowledge. They were experts on our trip and could guide the teachers around like they had visited there 100 times before! We managed to solve the mystery of the missing girl – Rose Webster – by using our geography skills to locate her! The whole ordeal was reported by Year 5 in the local newspaper! Shortly after, Year 5 explored what Christmas was like in the Victorian era. We were so excited to hear from a real-life historian who shared their expert knowledge with us. We explored the lifestyle of the Victorians including having a go at some ballroom dancing ourselves!
Spring Term was where our creativity came to life. Through an exploration of the artist Henri Rousseau, Year 5 were able to practise different techniques and were fantastic at creating different tints and tones to match the style of Henri Rousseau. Their magnificent work was displayed in the Milefield Art Gallery! Following this, Year 5 were super excited about our computing topic where they could show off their skills through creating their very own game using Pyonkee! I would say this was one of Year 5’s favourite topics this year.
During the Summer term, we explored the ancient Egyptians looking at different gods, pharaohs and religious events. Straight away, Year 5 showed off their acting skills in our workshop where they absorbed so much knowledge! We couldn’t believe how they mummified the bodies! Finally, we have finished the year with textiles in DT. A lot of Year 5 were apprehensive about learning how to sew but we now know different stitches, fabrics and how these all contribute to our environment!
You have worked so hard Year 5 and I can’t wait to support you through Year 6. You have all made me so proud! Well done!
Year 5/6
As the year ends, I just want to say how fantastic Year 5/6 have been this year. It has been a pleasure to be their teacher. They have shown themselves to be true role models for the rest of the school, hardworking, resilient, and independent. I am so proud of them and I’m sure you are too.
We began the year by exploring Langsett and gathering a breadth of geographical knowledge. They were experts on our trip and could guide the teachers around like they had visited there 100 times before. We managed to solve the mystery of the missing girl – Rose Ivy Webster – by using our geography skills to locate her. The whole ordeal was reported by Year 5/6 in the local newspaper. Shortly after, Year 5 explored what Christmas was like in the Victorian era. We were so excited to hear from a real-life Historian who shared his expert knowledge with us (PS: this was Mrs Morgan-Briggs’ Dad!) We explored all aspects of the Victorians including having a go at some ballroom dancing ourselves.
Spring Term was where our creativity came to life – this topic was a favourite amongst the class, it was so much fun! Through an exploration of the artist Henri Rousseau, Year 5/6 were able to practise different techniques and were fantastic at creating different tints and tones to bring the jungle to life. Their magnificent work was displayed in the Milefield Art Gallery. Following this, Year 5/6 were super excited about our computing topic where they could show off their skills through creating their very own game using Pyonkee. This was tricky but we did amazingly well!
Finally, during the Summer term, we explored the ancient Egyptians looking at different Gods, Pharaohs and religious events. Straight away, Year 5/6 showed off their acting skills in our workshop where they absorbed so much knowledge. We couldn’t believe how they mummified the bodies! Finally, we have finished the year with textiles in DT. A lot of Year 5/6 were apprehensive about learning how to sew but we now know different stitches, fabrics and how these all contribute to our environment – they have loved it!
What a year it has been. We have learnt so much! You have all made me so proud!
Year 6
I can’t believe we are at the end of the year! It has been an absolute pleasure to teach Y6 this year and I am confident they will achieve absolutely amazing things in life! Here is an overview of the amazing year we’ve had in Y6:
In Autumn 1, Y6 absolutely loved our History topic of Crime & Punishment! They were really engaged and loved our trip to York Dungeons. Following on from this, we explored Trade in Geography- I was so impressed by the geographical knowledge and vocabulary our children used! Their end outcome presentations persuading companies to be more ethical when trading was amazing! We produced some amazing writing in Literacy when exploring the texts Otto by Tomi Ungerer, King Kong by Anthony Browne and Rosa by Nikki Giovanni.
During the Spring 1 period, children were hooked when exploring our key artist Frida Kahlo; I was astounded at the number of artists we had in our class! Their end outcome mixed-media self portraits were outstanding, it was lovely to see how proud our Y6s were seeing their work on display in our Milefield Art Exhibition. On many occasions, children came up to the front to help me teach the lessons which was lovely to see! Moving into Spring 2, children enjoyed the computing topic of ‘Arcade Paradise’, where children successfully created a game using Pyonkee. We have some very skilled coders and programmers in our class!
Summer 1 & 2 were the most memorable for me- SATs being one of the main reasons! In May, our Y6s took their SATs assessments- it was a long wait for us all waiting for results but every single child made us so proud! The results were definitely worth waiting for and really reflected how hard your children worked to achieve outstanding scores. Moving onto Summer 2, this has been the most memorable one yet- London for our residential, the inflatable, leavers' assembly, leavers' party and not forgetting McDonalds! In D&T we have made motorised windmills, the children have really enjoyed this!
This year has been memorable, enjoyable (sometimes stressful!) but we have enjoyed every minute with you and hope you have too. We will really miss you in September, good luck Y6!
Miss Creamer
Year 6, we are so proud of all you have achieved this year. We have thoroughly enjoyed everything from Six The Musical to the London West End! We will miss each and every one of you and cannot wait to see what you go on to achieve in your lives. Good luck and please do not forget us... From all the staff at Milefield.
We want to hear from you! Please take 5 minutes to complete this feedback online so we can improve in 2022-23 and keep doing what we do well. Thank you in advance for your time...
Pupil Voice
We sent out a QR code for pupils in school to complete feedback about our curriculum and school in general. We were pleased with the feedback, below are the headlines from this...
A few quotes on the positives from the year:
My teacher
Art and having Mrs Morgan- Briggs as a teacher
I've really enjoyed the afternoon lessons and i have enjoyed having mrs morgan briggs as my teacher and i have enjoyed the trip we went on and the different texts we have been doing in L.I.R.A. I have also enjoyed what we have been doing in literacy.
Lots I really enjoyed y6 and I'm sad to go. The first trip to York was amazing and the London residential was so fun we even went to Mac donalds and M and M world! I've enjoyed all of the treats and suprise. Everyone enjoyed the mystery hunt to find our y6 teacher.
I love the fact how all the teachers make learning fun and do able, we have a lovely teacher and she treats us with many amazing things. Taking us on trips to experience what life would be like in different eras. We have also been writing up many stories and narratives!
1: The lessons were more fun . 2: Miss taught us a lot and made the lessons more collaborative. 3: Miss has supported us . 4: If we were on a question or our work was a bit tricky, she would model it on the board and help us.
Doing pinball machines and Mr Watling making my day brighter.
Knowsley safari park Learning Being with the best teacher
Some quotes from pupils about how we could improve - we will act on these in 2022-23 year...
You could have made some of the lessons last longer.
You could add more mysteries to found out what our new book is like to go on a school trip to found out.
1: Do more learning about wildlife and the ocean. 2: More R.E and religious lessons.
To do more music and P.E.
You could have improved by having more after school clubs like art or music
After school clubs:
We have taken this into consideration and already have a HeppDT club, an Amazelab Science club, many football clubs and art clubs prepped to be set up after summer. Watch this space!
School Trips
Quotes from pupil feedback - Where would you like to go on trips to?
Next year, i would really like if we could go to trips away to like London and Museums. This is because London would be a nice place to go and explore around. Museum's would be nice to look at stuff from the past or victorian times.
Go to a plane museum or to a huge zoo/aquarium because they are usually really fun and plus I would like to see the planes since they link to my desired future career.
Trips that are dedicated to learning
Similar ones to the ones we did this year and maybe one to an aquarium and zoo. I think a lot of classes would be thankful for those trips so it doesn't need much change.
I would like to go to the theatres and watch a new movie or like what Y6 had.
We already have some trips planned and details will be released in September/October 2022.
Wider Curriculum lessons feedback - How could we improve them?
An open letter was sent to all pupils in Y1-Y5 for them to join our parliament in Y2-Y6 next academic year. Mrs Trickett & Mr McClure reviewed all letters of interest and then staff voted for the members per year group. These pupils can be seen below...
They will support school in all areas of the curriculum and in the general running of school. We will arrange and help to run school events and be involved in meetings with staff to ensure we have a voice for all pupils across Milefield. We will also get to take part in many trips to ensure we are a democracy and have a voice that is heard!
Behaviour System/Policy 2022
We are taking our time to get this right over the summer holiday. School Parliament will then meet with senior leaders to discuss changes. Once consultation has been completed, we will send this out and share with parents on our website.
