Course Description: One benefit of providing services in a child’s home is that we work with the child in his/her comfort zone. One drawback is that we often have to compete with a child’s favorite activities to engage him/her in therapy tasks. This session will help therapists identify new materials and strategies to engage children in therapy activities.

Play Based Therapy in the Home: Achieving Functional Outcomes through Play

Class Description: The goal of home based therapy services is to achieve intervention outcomes functional to the home and community, and there is no more functional activity for children than play. Play incorporates intervention targets from all disciplines and is the “work” of childhood. But how do we use play as a framework for intervention? This course will address the research behind play as an intervention model and will discuss the play behaviors of children with typical play skills and how those are impacted by a range of disabilities. Participants will learn play based intervention strategies for children, across ages, including strategies for adapting play for children with significant disabilities and resources for supporting parents in the work of play! Further, they will learn to document play based interventions in a medically necessary plan of care.

This event is open to OT/ST/PT including OTAs, SLPAs, and PTAs.

Swallow Function Tool Kit – Revised with Goal Writing

This course will review completing a comprehensive bedside evaluation, including using cervical auscultation and palpation. This training will also focus on developing a treatment plan and goals based on evaluation of feeding and swallowing. Goals will be written based on the SMART guideline (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-based).

Course Description: This course will challenge the practitioner to make a paradigm shift; acknowledging the importance of the cardiopulmonary system as an integral component of postural control for patients of all ages. The speaker will present a model of postural control (Soda Pop Can Model) that demonstrates how breathing mechanics are linked to motor and physiologic behaviors. This is the cornerstone for the speaker’s multi-system clinical approach to the evaluation and treatment of trunk and/or respiratory impairments for patients with weakness or paralysis. The speaker will finish the day by presenting how to use this information clinically to develop positioning and ventilatory strategies that establish the pulmonary system as an asset rather than a liability for patients. The speaker’s private practice is primarily pediatric, but she will demonstrate the applicability of this material to adult patients as well.
