Sports in the Renaissance

Sports were played by both men and women during the Renaissance. Rich people created sports that had restricted playing fields along with specific equipment. Poor people created games as well that were easily accessible for them with less rules. Much of people's free time was spent playing these sports.

This is a game of ring toss that is similar to today.

Melee was a sport where you had to snatch a flag off your opponents back, this game is similar to tag that children play today. This was also a killing sport! Players could carry axes, swords and clubs in order to kill their opponents.

Here, children are playing several different types of games in this courtyard

This picture shows four men using archery in battle.

Archery was a very important aspect of medieval life. Men from 15-60 were required to own a bow and arrow and would have to practice almost everyday. Archery was first a way to fight in battle that later turned into a sport.

There were many popular team sports back in the renaissance. There were sports such as different variations on soccer, also including mob football. These sports had very large crowds and few rules. Other sports included sticks such as games of hockey and lacrosse.
This picture is of two jousters smashing into each other.

Jousting- Jousting is a sport where you are on a horse and you try to knock the other person off their horse. To earn points you have to hit the gridded grand guard on the opponents lower shoulder. If you touch the shield you get 1 point, 5 points for a shattered grand and get 10 points when you knock the person off their horse. But the rules state can’t hit the horse, can’t hit the person too high or too low and don’t let the horse slow down. Jousting is still a popular sport today.

This picture shows an owl going into action of falconry.

Falconry was a very ancient sport requiring trained falcons. Falconry was practiced by royals and nobles. The way Falconry works is to release the bird to go hunt and kill something for their owners. This allowed the birds to have a strong connection with their owners because of the falcon’s great task. On the other hand the lower classes used their less exalted trained raptors for dinner. Most of the birds used for Falconry were Eagles, Hawks and Falcons.

This is a picture of two brave fencers showing fencing tecnquies.

Fencing was taken place on a battlefield. As the sport developed soliders were staring to use thinner swords to take an advantage of gaps in knights armour. The knights however kept the thin swords for personal protection in formal fights called duels.

Here this picture shows a women golfing.

Golf developed in the 15th century and was so popular that in Scotland and was so popular that the Scotish Parliment was mad because it was taking away from men’s archery practice time.

This is what a tennis court looks like in the renaissance.

Individual sports - People started playing court tennis. This was the first time of tennis we see today.

These sports from the renaissance is still very similar from today. We still have jousting events, there are tons of golf courses, we see hockey games on t.v. and all other common sports taking place.
