DRET Primary Cup

On Wednesday 22nd March, 21 children from years 5 and 6 took part in the DRET Primary Cup (South) at Malcolm Arnold Academy. The children competed against lots of other schools within the academy in either Netball or Football.

The boys competed in football, led by our Sports Apprentice Mr Graham. They played against 13 other teams and finished 6th overall. There was some tough competition this year with The Abbey and The Arbours performing above expectations, resulting in some teams finishing lower down the order than expected. All the boys performed brilliantly and having had little practice before hand, the boys showed a lot of grit and determination and competed at a high standard. We are all very proud of their efforts.

The Netball team won all their pool games and progressed to the next round in the afternoon. They played against some tough competition including Briar Hill and Malcolm Arnold Prep. The girls performed exceptionally well and placed 3rd overall which means they have qualified for the Primary Champions Day at Charnwood College on 20th May. This will be further opportunity for the girls to receive elite coaching and play matches against the top 3 northern primary academy teams.

The netball lead at Charnwood College, commented that the Cedar Road netball skill set was one of the highest in the competition, which was a massive complement to all involved.

We couldn't be more proud of the girls for all their hard work and commitment. They have showed such improvement over the last few months and I am very sad to be leaving them to go on Maternity Leave!

The next major competition will be the DRET Summer Cup which will hold events such as swimming, athletics, and hockey. This will be another great opportunity for the children at Cedar Road to showcase their sporting talents.

Shakespeare Schools Festival

"On the night of Shakespeare School Festival it was a very fun experience to do. The best bit was when we got to perform afterwards, Trudy asked my parent if I can join her acting group." Isobel

"We went to the Deco Theatre! We performed on the stage doing Hamlet. I felt nervous before we started the play. As we were performing, I felt more and more confident. It went really well and everyone didn't forget their lines, It was really fun! I liked that we got to watch the other school's perform. We got to use lots of props on stage. We went first on stage to perform. As someone said we are first on stage, everyone felt really scared and nervous! The performance that we were doing (Hamlet), we were on the stage for half an hour! Me and Verity (someone next door), were holding a ghost puppet with a sword! I had sooo much fun. Trudy spray painted our white t-shirts for what we were wearing on the stage. Most of us were wearing a white t-shirt which has a H for Hamlet. I was a narrator and a ghost. For the ghost, I had to put my hand in a glove." Jessica

"I LOVED it and I had so so much fun and I loved the experience. All of the other schools were good too. I was not scared at all because I felt braver and I was with my friends and I know that no one would laugh at me. I wish that I could do it again." Lauren

"Near the start of January a group of people from Year 5 including me were given the opportunity to do a drama show. Myself and the other year 5's had a director who's name is Trudy who helped us a lot. We were doing a very famous writers story called 'Hamlet' by William Shakespeare. in the story there was an adult called Hamlet who's father had died. Soon after that, Hamlets uncle Claudius married Hamlet's mother Gertrude and Hamlet is not happy about it. In the story right at the start you will meet three characters called Horatio (who is Hamlet's best friend) Marcellus and Bernardo, who are the Kings guards. I am Bernardo and I was really happy when I got to be one of the Kings guards. Two days ago on Tuesday in March at the Deco Theatre all of us performed our show and it was really fun! There were three other schools who played: Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Nights Dream." Minnie

"I went to the Deco Theatre because I was doing a Hamlet play and I was the 2nd main character, Claudius and my favourite line was 'Love? His affections do not that way tend. Nor what he spake, like madness. There’s something in his soul and the hatch and the disclose will be some danger—which for to prevent, he shall with speed to England. What think you on ’t?' I had thirty lines and I loved performing at the Deco." Jacob.

"The night of The Shakespeare School Festival was quite scary but exciting. I tried to give as much support as I could to my fellow actors. Overall it was a fantastic time and me getting picked to do it made me discover something inside me that I never knew I was good at. To be fair being a main character in a play is an experience. But I should be thankful for the teachers decision and my fantastic director Trudy. I am so glad I got to be Hamlet, the main character. Also I'm not giving myself all the credit, everyone did fantastic in the play from Hamlet to the narrators, they all did a great job. It was even scarier at the thought of me having over 75 lines. It was a fantastic experience for me and my class." Jake

London Stadium

We had a lovely day on Monday visiting Bobby Moore Academy School. We were lucky enough to have a tour around the West Ham stadium.

We saw the hospitality box, the VIP seating areas, the changing rooms, the practice running track, and we became football stars when we walked through the tunnel to see the pitch. The children really enjoyed it. After lunch, the children took part in a mini football tournament alongside other schools in the trust. They played 5, 5 aside matches and there were lots of goals scored!

Well done everybody, you were a credit to the school.

Cedar Road Reading Corner

Welcome back to The Cedar Road Reading Corner. This week we have some more fantastic book recommendations for you from our staff members. Let us know if you give any of them a try!

This weeks recommendations come from Mrs Badhan starting with The Tiger That Came to Tea by Judith Kerr for Key Stage 1.

"The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possibly be? What they certainly don't expect to see at the door is a big furry, stripy tiger!" This inimitable picture book is perfect for reading aloud, or for small children to read to themselves time and again.

For Key Stage 2 Mrs Badhan recommends Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson.

"Maia, an orphan, can't wait to reach her distant relatives a thousand miles up the Amazon. She imagines a loving family with whom she will share great adventures. Instead she finds two spiteful cousins who see the jungle as the enemy and refuse to go outdoors. But the wonders of the rainforest more than make up for the hideous twins and their parents. And when Maia meets a mysterious boy who lives alone on the wild river shores, she begins a spectacular journey to the heart of an extraordinary and beautiful new world."

And lastly for the adults, Mrs Badhan suggest trying A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

"Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism."
