Principals Report
To All Members of our incredible Lynwood School Community
Term 1 2022 has flown by.
In a blink of an eye the first ten weeks of our school year has thrown everything it could at us. As a strong and united school community, we have successfully met each challenge with enthusiasm and gusto. Banding together we have embraced the challenges of our new and exciting building program, welcomed 18 incredible new staff as colleagues and friends, worked through the impact of the new variant of COVID, welcomed 200 enthusiastic and energic Year 7s, increased our proficiency of online learning and CONNECT, witnessed our first streamed telecast of Lynwood Live and said farewell to staff.
It would be fair to say, we have been super busy!
In launching a new tradition in 2022, we welcomed in our new school year and Lunar New Year with the Chung Wah Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe. The splendour and energy of their performance permeated the school community and left everyone feeling excited about being back at school and ready for a successful term. 2022 was going to be full of opportunities we just hadn’t realised yet.
Our Year 7s threw themselves into high school life quickly and throughout their transition program, they modelled outstanding behaviour and resilience. Every student worked hard in each session and their efforts highlighted the outstanding preparation undertaken by their Primary school teachers to ensure they were ready for high school life and meeting a lot of new friends. Mrs Narducci, Mrs Simmonds, Mr Pottinger, Mrs Lethlean and Mrs Poole-McNabb ensured everyone knew where they needed to be during each session and lent a helping hand when things seemed a bit overwhelming. The Transition Team, lead by Mr Narducci, ensured we had guest speakers, team building activities and informative sessions about what it’s like at high school, and rounded the week off with well-deserved icy poles and rap session with Marksman Lloyd.
While our Year 7s were taking their first steps at high school our Year 12s were about to embark on their last 30 weeks of formal schooling. Ms Cleaver, Mr Bayliss and Miss McClelland wasted no time in setting the pace and checking in on everyone. Essential Skills sessions have focused on making the most of every minute, improving study habits and challenged students to start considering “what next?” - Apprenticeships, TAFE, Universities and or employment opportunities! The world will soon be their oyster! Supported by Mrs Guidera, our new Careers Practioner, the Year 12s quickly realised that they had their own private cheer squad on hand; urging them forward but ready to jump in if things got a bit shaky.
Halfway through the term, Omicron reached WA. As expected, our Student Services Team were well prepared and leapt in action contact tracing and calling parents and carers. Since then, we have support 175 students across every year group who have tested COVID positive and a whole lot more who have been identified as close contacts. The work the team has completed in the past 5 weeks has been nothing short of best practice. I want to thank them for the personalised approach that they have taken for each and every case and the countless evenings and weekends that they have spent calling families and checking in on what support everyone needed. Mrs Murray, Mrs Attard, Mr Coad and Mrs Narducci have asked that I acknowledge the overwhelming support the team have had from parents and carers, who have called, texted and emailed the team each day to let us know about their children. I know I have thanked parents and carers many times through CONNECT for the support that has been offered through this term. Our school wouldn’t have been as successful with out your help, words of support, encouragement and generosity in helping us to minimise the spread. I know it has been tough but THANK YOU 😊
The work which Mrs Narducci undertook during the peak of our caseloads has recently been recognised by our Director General of Education Lisa Rodgers.
One of the unforeseen positive outcomes of COVID has been our rapid embrace and use of technology. This term we have celebrated many innovative “firsts” using technology. With the high case loads of COVID we could not continue to hold our weekly year group assemblies. These are long standing event at Lynwood and allows for the student body to get together and share important notices and information. Keen to keep connected our Student Council stepped up under the stewardship of Mr Maloney and Mr Low and suggested using our classroom technology to broadcast across the school a live message via Teams. While our Student Captains crafted their first live TV address, Mr Stanley and Mr Bradshaw our all-knowledgeable IT wizards found cameras and microphones to make it happen. It was a huge success. Inspired by the students we have just held our first virtual School Board meeting and we are planning to create more opportunities for parents, carers, and students to join into more live events – stay tuned.
While all of this was happening EMCO Builders moved in. Over the ten weeks we have watched as temporary fences have engulfed the school, our large she oaks and gum trees have fallen, and service trenches have been dug around the boundary. Although it has created a range of challenges as carparks have been moved, entry points restricted, and dust and noise levels increased, the EMCO team have been outstanding and made the start as painless as possible. To help with the change in weather and the continued work at the front of the school, our School Board lobbied to get our bell time changed for Term 2. As of Wednesday 20th April, we will be finishing 5 minutes earlier to allow for students to navigate around the school and still get to the buses on time. Thank you to the Board for helping to support our request and to Jeremy and his EMCO team for all they have done to make a big job have as little impact as possible to the running of the school. If you are driving past the school over the break you w ill see lots of new work happening with the extension of the Kiss and Drive hopefully being completed ready for the start of term.
Please note that for the start of Term 2 we will have major changes to our school administration carpark. As main work is planned for this space during the first 5 weeks of term, there will be extremely limited access to the front administration building and parents will be asked to use the temporary Kiss and Drive on Metcalfe Road when picking up their students or attending appointments.
Lastly as the term has progressed, we have welcomed and farewelled several staff. We wish them the very best in their new and exciting roles. Thank you to Ms Fernandez for your dedication and enthusiasm for all things Science. We hope that you have an amazing time at your new school and also, we wish Mrs Simmonds the best of wishes and a great start for Term 2 in her new position.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone in the Lynwood SHS Community for making my term as Principal one of the most enjoyable and exciting times (however challenging). I will be moving back out of the Principal’s office, and welcoming back Mrs Hardy from her leave.
I wish everyone a well-earned, safe and relaxing break and look forward to working with you again in my normal position as Associate Principal.
Kelly Summers, Principal
Student Achievement
At the end of 2021, the Diving WA Annual Awards were delayed due to COVID-19. Last month however, the Awards were held, and Lynwood champion Ellyarn Granland received THREE awards! She also recently won the Open State Championship in 3m and came second on 1m. Ellyarn is also likely to be travelling again in June to the Eastern States for competitions after two whole years of not being able to! A stellar effort from a Lynwood student!
Congratulations to Harry Gordon Year 8, in the U14 3000m Race Walk. Harry crossed the line in 16:44.22 to claim BRONZE at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre
Alana Papalia Year 11, was scouted at the development squad to trial for under 18's state team, however due to only being 15, she was put in with 16 squad. Alana is continuing this year to play Rogers Cup with East Fremantle. Congratulations Alana!
EaLS
Lynwood leads the way into a sustainable future!
As part of the Environmental and Life Science (EaLS) course at Lynwood SHS, students have been a part of Scitech’s NXplorers program. The program is centred around the question “How can we be more sustainable with our food, energy, and water at school and in our lives?”
Students are in the planning and experimenting stage to find local solutions to global problems around the school and have already produced several innovative ways to reduce waste and to develop a smaller ecological footprint. The students have spent the last three weeks working with the Scitech staff to produce problems that need a solution. “The strength of this program is not only to reinforce our sustainability ethos here at Lynwood, but it also gives the students the opportunity to develop their 21st century skills; problem solving, creative thinking, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication” said new EaLS co-ordinator Mr Graham Johnson. He added that “Lynwood has a strong history with this program, picking up an Australian award a few years ago and the current students are looking to build upon the past to create a better future.”
The program will run during Term Two and the students will present their solutions in a showcase event to a panel of industry figures early in Term Three.
Graham Johnson, EaLS Coordinator
We have moved, but are still open for business!
With the current building program happening at Lynwood this year, the community recycling bins have been moved from their old location on Metcalfe Road to the back of the school at Yew Place.
You can still recycle your coffee pods, mobile phones, toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes, dish and hair care containers and batteries in the bins provided. Lynwood SHS is a leader in sustainable practices and recycling with twenty-two individual items able to be recycled through the school. We look forward to our bins being filled for the good of the planet.
Sustainability at Lynwood SHS
Our school recently received commendation from the Waste Authority for being a WasteSorted School participating for five years. The accreditation process includes hands-on activities for the students such as an annual waste audit and Access 10 students running our paper recycling program. Year 7 EaLS students manage the Community Recycling Station (CRS) which is now located at the end of Yew Place at the rear on the school. Coffee pods, batteries, mobile phones, dental care products as well as dish and air care products can be recycled in the CRS.
The school has recently added a metal skip bin and timber recycling making at total of twenty-five recycling streams at Lynwood Senior High School.
Lynwood’s Soccer Academy has had a busy and frustrating start to the year. Trials for the State Futsal Competition were well underway when COVID-19 restrictions kicked in, meaning we had to postpone the trials until later in the year. The Year 7 camp was also affected by restrictions, and at one point it looked like it may not go ahead at all, but fortunately we managed to put together a two-day excursion that worked well. The students pitted themselves against the XLR8 obstacle course, tried their hand at Kayaking and paddleboarding, played a bit of Futsal and had a couple of good wins against Safety Bay.
Soccer classes are going well despite the odd student in isolation here and there, and school team trials are all completed. The final fixtures should be forthcoming for the start of Term 2.
The year 6 soccer trial dates have been set and the first one will be the 4th May. Interested students can access the application package on the school website
Soccer Academy Awards Night 2021
The Soccer Academy held their final event of the year with a celebration of individual and team success at their Annual Awards Night. The students, as always, looked fantastic in their formal wear, showing they had class on and off the field. Well done to all award winners!

Lower School Deputies Report
Once again, I was delighted to see the new cohort of Year 7 students engage in their first week on campus, based around an alternate timetable. From all reports, they thoroughly enjoyed the various presenters and activities that were scheduled for them. This year there was a greater focus on mental health and wellbeing, and we were stoked to have Paul Litherland present on cyber security and protecting one’s presence online. Since then, the Year 7 cohort has integrated into the school well, and with patience, are awaiting the completion of the new school buildings. Their area at school has been reduced due to both COVID-19 restrictions and the building program, as trenches have been dug and filled in. The students have coped very well with the changes, and I am impressed with their flexibility. In fact, all our cohorts are coping with the changes, so I am super proud of them all.
Our IEC was reduced to only two classes this year due to the continued closure of Australian borders, but it is pleasing to see that we have had some new students enrol into the IEC to boost their numbers. On March 31, the students are off to the WA Museum to view the exhibits and participate in the exhibitions.
We have coped exceedingly well with COVID-19 this year. Masks can be frustrating, but we can see the benefits when students adhere to the mask-wearing, and it has been pleasing that there have been few cases compared with other schools in the metropolitan area. COVID-19 will be around for a long while and we must all continually adjust to its presence. If students are feeling stressed or anxious about current circumstances, then I encourage them to talk to Mrs Narducci, Mr Bayliss or Mr Coad in Student Services to get the support they need from the team.
I hope everyone continues to enjoy the rest of the term, has a great Easter break, and is ready to go that extra mile next term when school resumes.
Andrew Symington, Deputy Principal Lower School
Harmony Day Celebrations - Everyone Belongs
IEC
Harmony Week – Intensive English Centre visit to the WA Museum Boola Bardip
On Thursday, 31st March, both classes in our Intensive English Centre (IEC) travelled to the Western Australia Museum to explore its environs. The visit was generously provided by the Museum who were keen for all the IEC sites in Perth to visit during Harmony Week celebrations.
The two IEC classes were split into 3 groups and were led around the museum by the wonderful volunteers who generously give their time to help the numerous visitors that frequent the venue. The students visited the welcoming pod (Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn), and then worked their way around and upwards until they arrived at the 3rd floor and the Wildlife exhibit. Exhibitions included Innovations, Reflections, Changes, Origins and Connections.
All students loved the opportunity, with the greater majority never having visited the museum before. For some students, it was the first time they had EVER been to a museum, so the day was an extra special one for them. They were super keen to take their families soon.
The museum is a great venue to visit, so maybe take some time during the coming holidays to and walk around the galleries. You will not be disappointed.
Mr Symington, Deputy Principal Lower School
Technologies
We welcome to the team Mr. Andrew Thomas who has been teaching Design and Technology for many years at other schools here in Perth. Mr. Thomas has a breadth of skills in metal, woodworking and building and construction which he has been sharing with many students since Term 4 last year. Mr. Thomas is enjoying teaching our senior Building and Construction course and the odd game of staff versus student cricket at lunchtimes too!
We also welcome Mr. Mark Evans who has also been teaching Design and Technology for many years here in Perth, Victoria, and the UK. Mr. Evans is teaching our Certificate II in Engineering and senior Woodwork course. Mr. Evans has fit right in this year, getting to know staff and students quickly, and sharing his wide knowledge and skills in the workshops. He is another lunchtime cricket player!
Mr. Geoff Prew left us to take up a position at Rockingham SHS at the end of last year. After fourteen years teaching Design and Technology here, including our senior Woodwork course and Certificate II in Engineering, Mr. Prew made a huge contribution to our learning area and the school. He is missed indeed.
We are saying farewell to the amazing Ms. Alison Simmonds who has taught IT and Digital Technologies at Lynwood for the past fifteen years. Ms. Simmonds is also a Statewide Teacher Consultant for Digital Technologies curriculum and has won a job at a school closer to home where she will continue in this role. Ms. Simmonds has helped many students to excel as they move on to pathways beyond school. She has also helped many staff members with IT issues and performed too many roles in the school to mention! We will miss Ms. Simmonds a great deal as we wish her all the best.
Our students are learning a wide variety of life and work skills across the Technologies Learning Area from laser cutting to cooking, customer service, coding, computer networking, technical graphics, woodwork, metalwork, and engineering. We place great emphasis on the importance of the 5Cs of STEM - Critical thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Cultural Awareness. Pathways in Technology subjects lead to Certificates in Hospitality, CISCO Networking, Digital Technologies, Engineering, Building and Construction and a variety of trades. Students this year have made an excellent start in these areas.
John Townley, Head of Technologies
Technologies in Action!
The Year 12 VET Engineering course is in full swing with students from both classes on track to finish their Certificate.
In the past few weeks, the students have been completing their competency for the Participate in Environmentally Sustainable Work Practices unit which is quite fitting when considering the context of our school and its exceptional sustainability-focused programs. The class has created a recycled screwdriver from melting down aluminum cans in a crucible and created a tool head from stainless steel rod. The lathe and milling skills shown by the students has been exceptional, guided by ‘The Master’ Mr. Burvill one would expect nothing less.
I have enjoyed sharing these classes and learning from the best.
Mark Evans - Technologies Teacher
Lynwood Café 2022
This year’s Year 12 Hospitality class have hit the ground running! They have hosted the first café for the year as early as week TWO of the term. A new format was enjoyed by several staff who were able to choose from a small menu of savoury and sweet items, with muffins fresh out of the oven. The menu includes a selection of hot drinks and ice water.
Bookings are no longer required however we will have a maximum capacity of course, like any café.
We appreciate our regular customers so much, we are excited to be introducing a ‘Loyalty Card’!
Ms Melvin and Year 12 Hospitality
Robotics
Our Senior Robotics team meets on Thursdays after school in preparation for the WA Robotics Playoffs in August. The Lynwood Tech Tips team is currently designing, building, and coding a 55 kg industrial sized robot to compete in a sports-based robotics competition against school and University teams from WA.
We are looking for mentors with skills in engineering, mechanics, electrical, woodwork, digital and business and organisation. Mentors are adults who can volunteer their time to help the students achieve their team goals. Mentors can be of any age and often have connection to the school via being an alumni, retiree, or family. Please contact Mr. Townley if you think you can help us. john.townley@education.wa.edu.au or call 9354 0620
Science Department
It has been a wonderful start to the year in the Science Department. The teachers have been busy preparing exciting and educational lessons across years 7 to 12. We said goodbye to Ms. Annear, Mrs Town, and Mr. Priddis who are all taking on new challenges at schools around our wonderful State. This has given us the opportunity to welcome new staff to our team. Mr. Dix, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Ng and Mr. King have hit the ground running and are now thoroughly immersed in Science at Lynwood.
I would also like to acknowledge Ms. Fernandez who will also be taking up employment at another school later in the year.
Term 1 has seen the Year 7s inducted into the Science labs, completing many experiments and introductory lessons to equip them with the skills required for Lab technique and safety. The year 8s have been studying Biology which recently saw them undertake the task of dissecting a heart! The Year 9s have been learning about heat, energy, and waves, whilst the year 10s have been introduced to DNA and the theory of evolution.
I would like to thank all parents, staff and students who have been incredibly flexible in managing learning whilst COVID-19 interrupts our lives. I have personally missed three weeks of this term due to and I am looking forward to some continuity in Term 2.
All students should remember to access CONNECT if they are away and stay in touch with their teachers. And students, do not forget about STILE, our online learning platform, that we use in class and at home. Visit www.stile.com and check it out for yourself.
Stay healthy, look after yourselves and each other. I am looking forward to an enjoyable Term 2.
Craig Foster, Head of Science
Pedal Car Prix
Introducing the Lynwood Pedal Prix Racing Team
‘So, what exactly is Pedal Prix racing?,’ I hear people say. Pedal Prix racing is a new and exciting form of bike racing that Lynwood SHS will enter this year. The bikes that we race are recumbent bikes, (the lay down type) and after putting a hard shell around then we will go racing for three six-hour events starting next term.
Pedal Prix racing has been brought to the school by our new Science teacher Mr. Graham Johnson, who has run a team for the last four years at his previous school. “Pedal Prix racing gives the opportunity for a wide range of students to be involved: those who like to ride, the mechanics who work on the bikes, the logistics crew who organize the day, and the media team that record the event,” said Mr. Johnson. “It allows the students to incorporate the 21st century skills such as problem solving and creative and analytical thinking into a real-life situation” added Mr. Johnson.
The Epiroc WA Pedal Prix series starts in May with the Perth six-hour race and then travels to Bunbury in June and Busselton in August to round out the three-race season. Lynwood will debut two bikes in 2022.
Graham Johnson, Science Teaacher/EaLS Coordinator
Health and Physical Education
At Lynwood, we are lucky to have excellent swimming facilities to enjoy and this was much appreciated during the recent long spell of hot weather. As is usual a fantastic but busy start to the year. HPE were pleased to welcome two new staff members - Miss Craven and Mr. Gauci, who have been wonderful additions to our team.
As the term progressed, we experienced major disruption as the building program began and significantly affected our facilities, we had available. The students and staff have adapted seamlessly, and we eagerly look forward to seeing the end results.
Swimming Carnival Report
Due to the school’s ongoing building program and COVID-19, the Lynwood Swimming Carnival adopted a different format for 2022. Students who nominated to take part came to the carnival in year groups for selected periods throughout the day. No team events were held, and the focus was on individual events. Despite there being fewer students participating compared with previous years, the competition remained strong with the students involved being outstanding. Congratulations to all students who participated and congratulations to the winners listed below.

English Learning Area
We have a few new faces in the English Learning Area this year! I’d like to welcome Caitlin Woodford, Madilyn Frijas, Tanya Brooks, Iveta Glover, and Anne Velasquez to our team. I’d also like to welcome back Dorothy Cooke, who joined our team part of the way through last year. It’s been an incredibly busy term, and it’s hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of it and holidays are just around the corner.
Year 7 and 9 English teachers have been busy this term preparing our students for NAPLAN testing in Term Two. Students have just completed practice NAPLAN tests, to make sure they are familiar with the online testing format. The first round of OLNA testing also occurred early in March, so we are hoping some of our Year 10, 11 and 12 Category 1 and 2 students will achieve Category 3 in reading and Writing.
Thank you to all those parents and students who have been regularly accessing Connect this term, to continue to be informed about courses, assessments, deadlines, and student progress. This is vital during this time of uncertainty around COVID, with many students having to isolate as close contacts or recover from COVID themselves. We appreciate your efforts to stay connected to the school, and to what is going on in English classrooms.
Enjoy the holidays, and we will see you next term!
Allison Taylor, Head of English
The ARTS
We have been blessed to welcome five new staff members that have joined the Lynwood Arts Department at the beginning of the year.

Miss Joanne McDonnell, Dance & Drama Teacher
LOTE - Chinese
2022 is the Year of Tiger in the Chinese lunar calendar and represents prosperity and good luck. This year started smoothly with all new and old students who are interested in Chinese language and culture. We are well on our way to having a wonderful year in the Chinese classes.
We celebrated Chinese New Year by learning calligraphy, watching video clips, and making hongbao to explore cultural aspects of the Chinese New Year.
2022 is a special year for our Year 7 students who have joined in our Chinese program for the first time. How exciting! In Term 1, year 7 classes learned a very powerful tool – Pinyin, which is the Romanisation of the Chinese characters based on their pronunciation. We also learned some useful greetings and classroom instructional phrases. It is very rewarding to have students begin using greetings in Chinese. Well done to all Year7 students!
This term, there has also been a strong focus on the integration of ICT into our language program. To help students learn at home during this challenging time, all learning materials are available on CONNECT. From this term, we have also introduced Arch Chinese – an online learning system designed by Chinese teachers for new learners of the language - into our classroom to enrich Chinese teaching and further enhance students’ learning.
To conclude, thank you everyone for bringing your positive attitude, best behaviour and work ethic to the Chinese classes. We have enjoyed this term with you all and we are so glad to be part of your learning journey at Lynwood. Enjoy the last week of term and have a safe, restful break.
Jinwen Zhou/Xin Huang/Sophie Wang - Chinese teachers
Chess Club
After a rapid increase and popularity in playing chess in recent years, our Lynwood Chess Club membership has begun to stabilise, despite COVID-19 playing havoc. We have come a long way in promoting the club amongst the school community. Many staff members and students participate in the club regularly.
The Lynwood Chess Club has been fortunate enough to gain funding for the provision of new equipment. One of our achievements this term has been the ability of our new year 7 members to successfully engage with senior club members.
We look forward to more players joining and benefiting from playing chess. The Chess Club operates every Monday and Thursday at lunch time in B1.

Senior School News
Term 1 has certainly been busy! The flurry of course change requests has concluded and given way to the completion of class activities and assessments as students settle into their Semester 1 classes. The impact of COVID has resulted in more absences than usual and seen some changes to our normal schedule. Despite the challenges there has been a lot accomplished this term.
Our Year 10 students have settled into their first year of the senior school program, completing the March Round of OLNA and commencing the Work Studies program. We are fortunate to welcome Mrs Janine Guidera, as Career Practitioner, to the school. Through a number of initiatives, students are gaining a broader perspective as to their career pathways.
Year 11s have settled in to their selected ATAR or General pathway. The step up to Year 11 is always a big one as both the demands and choice associated with Senior School become apparent. Through the Essential Skills program, students have prepared their Individual Pathway Plans, attended sessions with the Defence Forces and learnt what is required to meet WACE requirements.
As I write this newsletter, our Year 12s have just 20 weeks of their secondary schooling left. Certainly, time has flown. While the Ball was postponed, there are still activities on offer to make the year memorable and I encourage our Leavers of 2022 to make the most of every minute in this, their final year.
Commencing in Week 2 of next term all Year 12s enrolled in a General or Foundation course will have their Externally Set Tasks (ESTs). Those that sat Round 1 of OLNA will get their results and we will wrap up Semester 1 assessment and reporting requirements. And we have a Year 12 Ball to enjoy!
Robyn Cleaver, Deputy Principal Senior School
Introducing our Career Practitioner - Janine Guidera
It was an exciting first term for me at Lynwood Senior High School as I stepped into the role of Career Practitioner. It already feels like I have been at the school forever because everyone has made me feel so welcome.
The first focus of the term was the establishment of the Careers Corner newsletter. The newsletter is published in Connect every Monday and advertises all things career-related to the students in Years 9 to 12 from university open days to how to source part-time employment. The calendar links students directly to events coming up, so they will always know where to find relevant information.
Our Year 10 students have been visited by the Jobs and Skills Centre in Thornlie for a series of presentations on the services they provide, assisting students to choose future pathways in both further training and employment. These presentations have been followed up by one-on-one interviews for our students where they have had the opportunity to get advice about their personal career path. Feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive, with students feeling more equipped to start exploring their options for study and training after Year 10.
Students in Years 10-12 have had the unique experience of trying the Work Window, a virtual reality work experience program, where they got to explore a range of careers without even leaving the school grounds. I am not sure who had the most fun, the students who were working alongside firefighters in a burning house, or the rest of us who watched them dodging burning doorways and waving their hands at imaginary obstacles!
And finally, our Year 11 and 12 students have been busy working through their future planning booklets. Whether they are headed towards university, TAFE, or employment, they have been learning about their options and consolidating their goals for the brief time they have left with us at Lynwood SHS.
Janine Guidera, Career Practitioner
