Who created the first cartoon? Emile Cohl, first started off as just a writer when he worked for the Gaumont film company, he had always wanted to be a writer, because that is what he was best at. Later throughout a few writings, he started working with animation. This was fascinating to him because in this, he thought about how interesting it would be if he had the ability to transform sketches into something real, something into life
Why cartoons? Creating cartoons was very powerful for Cohl because he wanted to put a shift into what cinema was back then, in 1908. He wanted to open the minds of people everywhere and be creative and show the world that this form of art could have potential and move far in life as we know it
The first animation that Cohl created was called Fantasmagorie. The animation was made up of entirely of 700 images then put onto negative film. Fantasmagorie is defined as a constantly moving complex succession of things seen or imagined. The film was a complete success for Emile Cohl and will have forever have changed the views of everyone working with him in the film industry at this time in 1908.
