Fun Friday by: Bella Post

Sometimes there is popcorn in the Commons and raffle tickets being given out. But did you know this is an actual organized event that people spend valuable time working on? It is called Fun Friday. Aric Thomas, the Principal of WKHS and Josh Almanson the Assistant Principal at WKHS, talked about what goes into this event.

What is Fun Friday?

According to Aric Thomas, the Principal of WKHS, Fun Friday "is an opportunity to connect students and staff through small, thoughtful gestures." It is also supposed to be something that promotes good times at our school!

What/where do activities happen on Fun Friday?

The activities this year are having popcorn in the Commons and a raffle. The winners of the raffle were able to win a gift basket.

When are future Fun Fridays happening?

Josh Almanson said that they try to do a Fun Friday every quarter. They seem to be mostly at the end. The last two were October 29th and December 21st. These fun days don't necessarily have to be on a Friday, the one at the end of the second quarter was on a Tuesday. The next one is presumed by Almanson to be near Valentine's Day, and the last month of the school year.

Who runs Fun Friday?

Aric Thomas says that Fun Fridays are run by the "PBIS Team, Activity Club, and the PTO." The PBIS [Positive Behavior Interventions and Support Team], and the PTO is the Parent-Teacher Organization.

Where did the idea for Fun Friday come from and what is the goal?

Aric Thomas brings up the fact that the goal of Fun Friday is improving "Student-Teacher Relationships" and "Sense of Belonging." He said that these were things that the school wanted to improve on based upon the Panorama Survey taken by students. The former assistant principal of Worthington Kilbourne High School, Ken Nally worked with the Postitive Behavior Interventions and Support Team to improve these relationships and belonging and then "Fun Friday was born."
