Literacy is not just how well a language is understood or a text is comprehended... in a world that is constantly changing, the meaning and goals of literacy are always shifting to accommodate those changes.
One aspect of literacy is visual literacy, which is the ability to construct meaning from visual images using exploration, critique, and reflection. Visual literacy skills include interpreting and producing images to communicate, reading and writing visual language, making judgments about validity, and using gestures, objects, signs and symbols accurately.
In my future English or art class, it will be of the utmost importance to me that students are constantly seeing connections to equity in their learning. I hope to demonstrate this through project-based learning, showing students both mirrors and windows in the curriculum, and bringing in multiple diverse guest speakers among other things.
Literacy skills are not solely meant to determine how you interpret new information. Being literate in practices that promote the success of all students what I believe to be the primary role of a teacher.
