Group Project
Monica Solinas-Saunders, Ph.D.
This assignment is a collaborative group-assignment that should take 10-14 hours to complete, including class time for 3 consecutive weeks. The activity supports the following learning objectives:
• Collaborate on the development of an idea to represent the risks associated with sex trafficking for specific groups of individuals.
• Organize sex trafficking data and information retrieved from the IU library or web-resources.
• Create charts and graphs representing data on sex trafficking, with focus on both perpetrators and victims.
• Design, create, and share the sex trafficking awareness campaign in Adobe Express.
These learning objectives are linked to Course Learning Outcome 3 (CLO3.0), according to which students are expected to design a mitigation strategy that can be applied to public safety issues that are local or national in scope. In addition, these learning objectives stem from Program Competency 5, which specifies that students are expected to design and present collaborative projects that focus on contemporary issues in criminal justice and public affairs.
For this project, students will learn to use Adobe Express. Adobe Express is a useful and powerful tool that allows to share creative, novel, and professional looking multimedia projects. An example of multimedia project created by students in Adobe Express can be found here.
Guidelines
You will create an anti-trafficking campaign by using Adobe Express and other digital tools (e.g., Adobe Spark Video, Social Media). You can find instructions on how to start a new project in Adobe Express in the video below, or by using this link
An anti-trafficking campaign must provide:
- the definition of the problem (it might take you about 15 minutes to find a comprehensive definition of sex trafficking).
- am estimate of the magnitude of the problem (data) from relevant sources, such as government or non-governmental agencies (2-3 hours).
- victim characteristics (1 hour).
- perpetrator characteristics (1 hour).
- a video that addresses individuals at-risk (potential victims or guardians) about the risks associated with trafficking in persons (2-3 hours).
- case studies (optional) (1 hour).
- policies (1 hour).
- recommendations (1 hour).
For this project, students will work in pre-assigned groups. Each group has been assigned a specific region of the United States and target audience. This means that each group will collect and present data on the specific region assigned to their group. In addition, each group will focus on a specific target audience—that is teens, parents of young children, or young adults. This is important, as different age groups reflect different sets of experiences and interpretation of messages. For instance, when you are referring to the parents of young children, you might want to explain how children might be lured into sex trafficking and ways in which parents can protect children. Similarly, when creating an awareness campaign for teenagers, you will use terms that are common among teens to explain the risk of being lured into sex trafficking. Please find your assigned group in the Table below.
