Spring Term Highlights 2023

Welcome to the 2023 Spring Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities!

Celebrating the New Year

As we started the New Year, we took part in Wassailing - the ancient custom of waking up the forest and blessing the trees for a good harvest.

We also learnt about how people around the world celebrate Chinese New Year...

...and the whole school celebrated with lunch cooked by Mr Wilson and his team.

Events

Years 3, 4 and 5 were keen to smarten up the presentation of their work as they got competitive for Handwriting Week.

We joined together to celebrate Children’s Mental Health Week.

The theme was 'Let's Connect' so Mrs Waite introduced a paperchain activity to show just that.

Everyone in school was invited to represent themselves on a piece of paper which was then linked to someone else.

It was wonderful to welcome so many schools to our Future Schools Evening.

It was also lovely to see pupils, who already know where they are heading after their time at St Hugh’s, chatting to their future school and asking questions.

Yet again, World Book Day proved just how much we all love a book and an excuse to dress up!

To share their love of reading, Year 8 pupils read to our younger children.

In some cases, the choice of book proved very funny...

Nursery and Pre Prep children had a wonderful time taking part in a dragon dance workshop.

The workshop fitted perfectly into the Year 2 China project and enhanced what all classes had learnt during Chinese New Year.

Topics and Trips

Nursery ventured to Ostler's Plantation for a morning of exploration and den building.

Reception were busy being pirates...

The children practised their handwriting to write their own message in a bottle, drew treasure maps, created wanted posters and designed their very own hats.

They even took their pirate theme into the woods for Forest School - creating pine cone pirates, hunting for treasure and even walking the plank!

This term Reception has started weekly visits to Westerley Care Home in the village.

The children have shared stories, played skittles, made Mother's Day bouquets and talked endlessly to the residents.

We look forward to catching up again after the Easter holidays.

On a very snowy day, Year 1 visited the Newark Air Museum to learn all about the history of aviation.

A highlight of the day was using a special machine to launch their own paper aeroplanes

They were also lucky enough to have a visit from 'Magic Grandma and Grandad' to teach them woodworking skills so they could build their own vehicle.

They even enjoyed a 'Journeys' themed dress up day.

Year 2 travelled to Leicester to visit the National Space Centre as part of their topic work.

With all their new found knowledge, they came to school dressed ready to enjoy their Space Day...

...and enjoyed taking part in lots of activities and experiments.

Year 3 travelled to Lincoln Castle as part of their topic on crime and punishment. They certainly got into character!

Year 7 visited the National Civil War Museum in Newark.

They looked at photos of various injuries sustained by soldiers on the front line and decided whether they were fatal or not before learning how to fire a musket, and re-enacting a trial and execution!

Year 6 took a trip to Woodhall fire station as part of their PSHEE topic on dreams and goals.

Year 6 also visited RAF Digby where they got to experience the original workings of the military base and watch a WWII film in its very own cinema.

Thank you to Mrs Hedinburgh for a wonderfully informative visit.

Year visited Stratford-Upon-Avon for a Shakespeare day.

The tour guide was incredibly impressed by their knowledge.

Perhaps their superb potted version of Romeo and Juliet (in 5 minutes!) in a whole school assembly paid dividends!

Forest School

This term we have been busy working on our team building, planning and communication skills by playing strategy games in the woods.

A game of Capture the Flag taught everyone balance, coordination and stamina!

There were some excellent hiding places as well as some incredibly sneaky tactics.

Everyone showed great perseverance when learning all about how to tie different knots!

We took part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

The children spent the week learning about birds, how to spot them and even made their own bird food before venturing into the hide to keep a look out.

We celebrated events in the calendar...

For Burns Night we cooked our own version of neeps and tatties on the fire.

We talked about St Valentines and made Valentine's Day inspired crafts - including hearts from birch twigs and woollen woven hearts.

Everyone enjoyed making and eating pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.

For Mother's Day we made flower bombs using clay, compost and wild flower seeds.

While Year 1 made their own recycled paper to create a Mother's Day card.

They even sprinkled wild flowers and herb seeds on the recycled paper so that each card could be planted in the garden after Mother's Day.

We enjoyed Hot Cross Buns toasted on the campfire and spoke about the history of the Hot Cross Bun.

We even had time to decorate leaves like an Easter Egg.

As always, we have looked after the Forest and had fun!

We are all looking forward to enjoying the Summer Term out in the woods.

Music and Drama

Our musicians joined over 250 pupils from 16 different schools across the county to take part in the Annual Prep Schools' Orchestral Day at Uppingham.

Mr Ferguson has also been putting our youngest musicians to work...

The St Hugh’s String Ensemble performed at Lincoln Music and Drama Festival held at Lincoln Methodist Church.

They received a first place trophy and very positive feedback from the judges. Well done!

A huge round of applause for all the musicians and to Mr Ferguson and the Peri music team for all your hard work. It was a fabulous concert.

SETS

The Set Cross Country is always a competitive event with individuals competing for a place on the podium while also trying to earn as many set points as possible.

Reception class may have had a cheeky little warm up over the starting line on their way to Forest School...

...and they took a break from their lesson to cheer on the runners as they went past.

Everyone did fantastically well for their Set and White Set were crowned the winners!

There is always much excitement for our annual Set Pancake Race.

Everyone was eager for break time to arrive so they could race for their Set, tossing pancakes along the way.

While the Set Talent Show saw all of Prep take to the stage - either choosing to perform as a group or showcasing their individual talents.

Sport

We were delighted to host the U13 Girls’ ECB Cricket Regional Qualifier and are through to the county finals to be held next term!

We have had a very successful cross country season and the hard work at running club certainly paid off!

It was a superb performance at Ayscoughfee Hall for our last race of the season.

We dominated in all four categories with some outstanding individual runs and a great team effort. With eight individuals finishing top 3, everyone else top 12, and all four teams coming 1st place - we were on fire!

In football, we have had some great matches...

...and even hosted our own Football Festival.

Our Hockey Teams have enjoyed competing this season...

...and our younger players learnt new skills at a masterclass led by Matt Bell, England Hockey Talent Development Head Coach.

In Netball we have enjoyed a variety of fixtures.

Our U13s had a fantastic weekend at the IAPS U12 Netball Festival in Ipswich.

It was great to see our younger players take part in our very own Netball Festival.

In Rugby, the boys travelled to Sherborne to compete in the IAPS U13 Small Schools' Rugby 7s Festival.

It was a great experience and a fantastic weekend was had by all.

It's been a busy term poolside...

The St Hugh’s U11 Swim Team put on a great show at Repton for the IAPS Regional Qualifier.

We hosted our first U9 Gala of the year, with swimmers from Years 3 and 4 competing in a variety of competitive races.

Our U9 & U11 Intra-School Swimming Gala was a huge success and the swimmers enjoyed being cheered on by family and friends.

Everyone did themselves proud and it was great to see three records broken by Annabelle J - held since 2012.

An U9, U10 and U11 mixed swimming team travelled to Grantham for Grantham Prep’s Annual Swimming Gala.

Overall, we came 1st with 58 points; 12 points ahead of second place Grantham Prep. Very well done to all the swimmers who took part in this event!

We were absolutely thrilled to find out we had won the School category for the Lindum Lincolnshire & LTA Awards.

Our thanks go to Tattershall Tennis Club for the nomination and for all the work they do for our tennis players.

Boarding House

The Boarding House has enjoyed welcoming lots of new people to stay...

There has certainly been a hive of activity with lots of events and activities, including...

Pool parties - which have become very popular...

A Murder Mystery Evening - who couldn’t admit to being disappointed at missing out on the 1940s murder mystery after seeing the video?!

Balloon modelling...

A Silent Disco...

Bubble Football...

...not forgetting zumba, pamper nights, scavenger hunts, takeaway & movie nights, and a fabulous talent show with special guests, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden (aka Mr & Mrs Wyld!). The list of fun has been endless!

But the one event that can't be forgotten is the Boarders' incredible fundraising achievement - their gruelling 12-hour 'swimathon'.

Thanks to their hard work and everyone's fabulous support and generosity, they smashed their target and are now enjoying their new Games Room...

Ta-dah! The fantastic new Games Room which is proving very popular...

Getting Ready for Easter

Nursery and Pre Prep had fun on their Easter Egg Hunt.

Our thanks go to the Parents' Association for buying the Easter Eggs.

RUN with a CHUM

What an amazing way to finish the term!

Thank you to everyone who came to support RUN with a CHUM - helping us to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND Association).

Here is just a handful of the fantastic photos we have - more to follow!

To all our families and friends - have a lovely Easter break!
