UP AGAINST THE WIND FOR TEAM SINGAPORE RIO OLYMPIC UPDATES: 12 AUG 2016
Forecasted weather in Rio pointed to fairly good weather with partly cloudy and blue skies, and North-Westerly winds to be between 11 to 17 knots (in the later afternoon) with temperatures of 25 to 29 degrees. Swells were expected to be much bigger between 2.5m to 4m. Excellent and very tricky conditions for racing! With good winds and clear weather, races commenced promptly and were completed on schedule. Winds at Escola Naval and Ponte turned out to be lighter, between 9 to 13 knots picking up to 16 knots during later half of racing. Niteroi course saw winds of about 15 to 20 knots.
In the 470 women class, Jovina and Amanda battled strong winds and couldn't manage to finish the last race as a result. They are currently slotted at 20th position overall. New Zealanders Jo Aleh & Polly Powrie recovered from a disqualification at Race 1, finishing in 4th and 1st today, coming in 1st position overall, with 6 points. Japan's Ai Kondo Yoshida and Miho Yoshioka follows closely with two points behind.
After a rest day, RS:X Men and RS:X Women were back on the water, completing three races in challenging conditions. TeamSG windsurfer Leonard Ong, now stands in 33rd position overall – with a 36th, DNF (Did Not Finish) and his best in Race 9 at 20th. Dorian van Rysselberghe (NED) continues to lead the men's fleet with a 4th followed by consecutive wins, extending his lead from Nick Dempsey (GBR) who is now 8 points behind race leader.
In the RS:X Women’s fleet, TeamSG windsurfer Audrey Yong had a DNF in Race 7, finished 24th in Race 8 and 22nd in Race 9, placing her 24th overall on the leaderboard. Leading the fleet is Italian Flavia Tartaglini (4th in world ranking and debutant at Olympics), netting 35 points. While Charline Picon (FRA) and Stefania Elfutina (RUS) are 1 point behind and on break tie.
Nacra 17 class raced in the Niteroi course, completing four races right on schedule. Conditions were not in Justin & Denise's favour causing them to finish with 14th, 18th, 18th and 17th placings, dropping their overall position to 18th on the leaderboard. After six races with one discard, Australians Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin leads with 17 points, followed by Ben Saxton & Nicola Groves (GBR) with tie points – broken only when the Australian pair scores in two firsts in the day’s races.
Laser and Radial classes will resume racing on 12 August, while RS:X Men and RS:X Women classes will enter their last day of racing before medal race for top 10. 470 Women class will continue their races and Skiff 49erFX class will start their races tomorrow. Nacra 17 class will go for a rest day, after completing six races.
