Note from our Head

The perfect recipe for effective and enjoyable learning relies on a number of important ingredients; passionate and encouraging teachers, a healthy mind and body, well-executed teaching methods and a positive attitude from the children towards their studies, to name just a few. What is perhaps not emphasised enough is the importance of the learning environment and ensuring there is the right space available to enable our boys and girls to flourish.

We are so delighted with our new and improved art studio (see the transformation below) with the furniture and layout deliberately designed for both individual and collaborative work, and flexible enough to work with children's preferred learning styles whether it's seated at tables, standing up at boards, working on the floor, with music, or somewhere quieter to work on their various pieces.

Our Head of Art Mrs Fidler has reported the children have been delighted by the changes and immediately relax into a creative state of mind as soon as they enter the studio. The walls are already beginning to fill up with the products of their creative adventures.

The art studio will be officially launched early next month (more to follow on this!) but we are so delighted the children are enjoying it and bringing their Oakfield Creativity to life in this new and improved space!

Have wonderful weekends all.

BIRTHDAY RECORDING

Eco Warriors

This term's eco warriors have been busy helping to distribute plants to all of Oakfield's classrooms! Last year, the eco group raised money from Earth Day and Cleaner Air Day and bought a selection of spider plants, dragon plants, snake plants and ferns. All of these have been carefully selected as low maintenance plants that have excellent air purifying qualities.

Oakfield's Cleaner Air group very kindly made 'care cards' to go with each plant. The eco warriors studied them carefully to decide on the best position in the classroom for each plant and will take responsibility for watering them every 10-14 days.

The children enjoyed learning about how plants help our environment and were impressed that the pots were all made from recycled bamboo and rice! Miss Francis would like to extend a special thank you to Oakfield's Cleaner Air Group for supporting this initiative and hopes we can continue to make Oakfield a greener place!

SPORT

Due to House Hustings today this week's Sports Stars of the Week will be announced on Monday.

YEAR 6

This week we learnt about the layers that make up earth and created our own earth models out of plasticine. We learnt that the outer core layer of our earth is so hot that it is made up of liquid rock. We simulated this liquid rock using tomato soup to see how heat affects continental drift and discussed how this movement links to the evolution of living things.

YEAR 2

Year 2 had a fantastic week!

Taking to heart the whole school focus – Collaboration – we used concrete manipulatives in our mathematics lesson to order two-digit numbers.

We went swimming for the first time on Wednesday. The children showed excellent courage. Everything went smoothly an at the end they said ‘It was so much fun!’. We also discovered that swimming lessons make us very hungry!

YEAR 1

The Year 1 children have been working really hard to create some fantastic self-portraits. They have been discussing the story ‘We are all different’ and being unique.
