How Lee knew the time was right to re-enter education at 45 years of age

Name: Lee

Age: 45

Course: GCSE English

I have always wanted to re-take GCSE English ever since I left school. I went to Bullsmoor School in Enfield (now Lea Valley Academy) and did very well in class, but when it came to sitting exams I was far too nervous and would get brain freeze.

After I left school I got a job straight away - no one really went to university – and I’ve been working pretty much ever since, pausing only to raise a family.

Last year I decided the time was right so I enrolled at Harlow College and had an amazing teacher who was so lovely, supportive and helpful.

Then COVID hit so we couldn’t come to college anymore and had to take our classes online.

I know it’s a massive gap from leaving school but I am a different person to when I was 16. I just wish I had done this a while ago but life gets in the way sometimes.

When you are working and studying it is hard. When I had to attend classes, I had to leave work early. It is a bit challenging to fit around work.

My message to any older person thinking of getting back into education but who may be nervous about it, is absolutely go for it! You’re never too old, and it’s never too late. If it is something you want to do, you will definitely get all the support you need at college to help and guide you.
