Dear Readers,
You might be wondering why I chose alpacas as my topic. Well I chose this as my topic because I thought it would be interesting to learn about them. At first, I was like alpacas are gross and would never consider to do an entire project on alpacas. Then all of a sudden I just found an interest in them and wanted to learn more about them. So I did some research and found them really fascinating. I also found it exotic to choose alpacas. So then decided to find out more about them and make it my topic.
Sincerely,
Priscilla
Research Paper:
Honestly I have learned a lot from this research on alpacas. One thing I have learned was that alpacas would have been extinct. Then the incas (Quetcha) people kind of saved them. Now the people who almost drived alpacas to extinction have more than 30 thousand alpacas.
While researching alpacas one thing I learned was alpacas are domesticated versions of vicunas. They are mostly raised because of their soft wool. I also learned that they are really good with children and they're only live 20 to 25 years old. Among all of the alpacas relatives, alpacas are the smallest. Most of the alpacas are native to the Andes. However, alpacas have been exported around the world, including the United States, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. So basically their habitat is farmland.
The first sight of alpacas was before the great pyramid of Giza was even made. In the 1940's Don Julio Barreda started to breed them and toward a better color or fibre. He would feed them better and have them behind a fence. He would play close attention to the alpacas genetics and would put them in to different herds. One herd was called huacaya and the other herd is called Siri alpacas. Now he's known as the worlds finest alpaca breeders. The "accoyo" alpacas are from the bloodline of his Peruvian herd.
Throughout this research on alpacas my opinion on alpacas have changed. At first I didn't find alpacas all that interesting, then I started to learn about them and they are pretty interesting. I found out that's alpacas are very social. I also learned that alpacas only spit if they feel threatened or distressed. One thing I found very interesting is they actually hum. In the end, I feel like I have learned a lot about them and glad I picked alpacas as my topic.
History of the alpacas:
About 6000 years ago the first alpaca appeared. The countries in South America continued to breed them. The Spanish conquest of Peru led to death of 90% of the native people, and animals. They took alpacas to high Andes and then would slaughter them in favor of the European sheep. Then all of a sudden unexplainable the alpaca linked to all the quetcha people. The quetcha people were able to prevent the alpacas from becoming extinct, since the herd has been increasing. The alpaca population in Peru is about 3 million, 300 thousand in Bolivia and only 30 thousand in chile. Alpacas have been in the uk and Europe since the 19th century. In 1989, there was only about 150 alpacas in the uk. Not until 1995 . The first import of 300 alpacas to chile. Then the interest in alpacas began to grow. In 1998 saw the first import of Peruvian alpacas. Since 2008 there are now around 25 thousand alpacas in the uk. Now the alpaca market is expanding at an annual rate of 20%. It was expected that their would be at least 100 thousand alpacas in the uk and 5 thousand alpaca owners by 2015.
Alpacas are in the same family of llamas, vicuña, and guanacos. Alpacas are very rare. These fine createres were beloved by the ancient inca civilization. For about 5 thousand years they were considered a high quality fibre, then spaniards came and to them the were considered as a competitor to the grazing lands of there sheep. At a point the alpacas became a source of meat and was slaughtered to a point of extinction. Soon in 1800, the beauty of the alpaca was rediscovered.
Said the Alpaca
I climbed the highest Andes with you
My fur made you warm
But it wasn't enough
You still left
You came back
Looking for my forgiveness
But you couldn't gain it back
Said the alpaca
Pitch Black
I remember running through the forest real fast, not knowing why. I had felt the presence of someone, something chasing me. In a spit of a second everything went pitch black for a second, so I thought. I woke up in the Andes Mountains tied up next to a house, I was real thirsty. I started screaming " hey is anyone in there I'm real thirsty ", I could here them in the house but they didn't answer. After a while an older grayed hair man came up to me and petted me. Then I asked him where am I , but didn't answer me he just smiled. Then untied me and walked me to a river. Once we got to the river, I went running and just kept drinking and drinking. After a while I seen my reflection, and seen that I had turned into an alpaca.
I tried and tried to explain to the old man that I really actually was human. He just looked at me with a confused face, he had no idea what I was saying. At once he grabbed me and took me back to his house. When I got to the house, put me in a stable where there was many more alpacas. There was many there, but there was one that caught my eye. I went up to him and asked" hey how can I escape from here". He then said " leave now that you have the chance, don't ask questions just leave". Obviously I got worried and started to plan out a plan. I decided to leave at night. Once I had the chance I jumped and started to run fast. Running and running without paying attention i bumped into a tree, everything went pitch black. Once I woke up it was all a dream.
