Val d'Aran is amazing anytime of the year, but the magic of winter makes it truly a skiers paradise. Baqueira-Beret this season officially opened on December 3rd, but because of about 50 cm of fresh snow and the snow machines working non-stop, they were able to open earlier. On opening day, all 36 lifts were operational making it one of the best places to ski in Europe.
The Baqueira-Beret ski resort comprises three zones; Baqueira, Beret, and Bonaigua. Each of these zones offers skiing for all levels. Beret has two large separate parking lots with easy access to several lifts in three directions, as well as easy access to Baqueira.
The 10 mile (16 km) road from Viehla to Baqueira in Val d'Aran is absolutely fantastic. There are several beautifully preserved stone villages along the way. Due to strict building codes, the cultural architectural integrity is maintained and even the newer buildings blend into their surroundings.
At nightfall, the holiday lights illuminate the city of Viehla, making it a wonderful place to go for a stroll, shopping, and dining on the local Aranese cuisine.
