34th Street WIDENING Bringing Moore, Okla., traffic relief and a bike/hike trail

Cardinal Engineering provided civil engineering and Lemke Land Surveying provided survey services to the City of Moore for improvements to 1 mile of SW 34th Street from South Santa Fe Avenue to South Telephone Road. Cardinal Engineering and Lemke completed the project and merged with Parkhill in September of 2020.

“This project was important in that it was widened to 4 lanes due to the new bridge over I-35 that connected Moore’s east side and west side with a major arterial roadway to relieve traffic off 19th Street in Moore.” – Bill Swain, PE, a Team Leader in Parkhill’s Site Development & Planning Sector.

A large roadway culvert was an important part of the multi-pronged project in which the team replaced a bridge. Efforts for that involved a hydraulic analysis, help with a block grant and environmental clearance, and hydrant relocations connected to a 72-inch water line.

Intensive public involvement led to creating a 10-foot-wide bike/hike trail system along this section of 34th Street.

A significant amount of Utility relocation and coordination happened between two municipalities and multiple service providers in the overall project.

The project featured an innovative traffic control plan and methods and roadway improvements at either end of the project area. The team reconstructed driveways and addressed sidewalk, ADA and construction issues.

The SW 34th Street Improvements project has received recognition in the 2020 Road Awards for City, County, BIA, or State Highway Design by the Oklahoma Asphalt Pavement Association.
