Class 1 0 Learning Journey Spring Term 2 - 2021/2022

Literacy

During this term in Literacy, we used the Land of Make Believe as our inspiration and created two amazing outcomes.

For our first piece we used skills such as prepositional phrases, different sentence types and high-level vocabulary to describe three different settings – a forest, a castle and a waterfall.

For our second piece we created a character description of a magical fairy. For this piece we used lots of figurative language to create powerful imagery for our readers.

We really impressed Mrs Hayes and Mr Garrood with our determination and resilience to write some fantastic pieces of writing for our writing portfolio.

Here are some of our final outcomes from this half term...

LIRA

In LIRA this half term we have studied numerous extracts from a range of different texts. Firstly we looked at some non-fiction texts about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. These also helped us to gain some knowledge into our new topic too!

We then moved onto a text called ‘You are Awesome’ before moving onto ‘The Secret Garden’. Finally, we started to look at the beginning of ‘Cogheart’. We have continued to develop our comprehension skills and focused on how we should answer three-mark questions.

Maths

In maths this half term we started learning about different types of measures and how we can convert between different units. We then applied our skills to problem solving and reasoning questions.

We then focused on interpreting different graphs and timetables during statistics.

We have also recapped on the methods for all four operations and applied these in a number of different real life contexts – we enjoyed planning an Easter Garden party for Mrs Hayes where we had to make sure we stuck to our budget!

We have also looked at using our calculation skills to solve missing number problems where we needed to use inverse operations.

We have also continued to show the school values of being resilient and independent when improving our arithmetic scores! Mrs Hayes and Mr Garrood have been really blown away - great to see so many of our pupils striving to be the best they can!

Topic

This half term we have had a geography focus in the topic - Map Makers!

During this unit of geography we compared the similarities and differences of two different places, one in the UK (Barnsley) and one in the USA (Wyoming). We explored the human features of these places and used the information we had found to create our own maps.

We learnt that maps don’t necessarily have to have physical features, but they can also have human features on them too.

Also during this topic, we learnt about the different types of energy sources and used this to create our own wind turbines.

Science

In science this term we looked at plants.

As part of science week, we planted our own seeds and monitored the growth. We found out the things that plants needed to grow and ensured our plants got the same.

We explored the different ways plants reproduce and used this to help us compare different life cycles of plants and animals.

Titanic Trip

During this half term we also visited the Maritime Museum in Liverpool. We had a fantastic time recapping our learning all about the Titanic. We attended a fantastic workshop and even had some time to sketch the amazing buildings of Liverpool. It was a great day!

Spellings

In class 10 we have continued to work hard on our spellings this half term. We are so proud of how our pupils have been working so hard to improve their spellings and their scores on Spelling Shed.

Keep logging onto Spelling Shed and let's all continue to improve our spelling skills.

Who will be at the top of the leader board next half term?

World Book Day

Thank you to everyone who took part in World Book Day. It was lovely to see so many of our pupils talking about different books and book characters that they enjoy. We also loved getting involved in the 'Masked Reader' this year too!

Supporting Ukraine

Thank you to everyone for you kind donations to help in supporting Ukraine. We were over whelmed by the generosity of our school community. We talked about how we can help and support others and linked this to our school values of teamwork and kindness.

Celebrations

During this half we have had lots of children show the school values and were awarded certificates! Lots of other celebrations too. Make sure you continue to share your celebrations from home with us by either bringing things into school, on Twitter or on Seesaw - we love to see them!

What will we be learning next half term...

Y5 Swimming

Remember Y5 pupils will continue with their swimming lessons next half term on a Tuesday. They will need to bring their swimming kit to school in a bag on these days (swimming costume/shorts and a towel).

Happy Easter!

Thank you Class 10 for all your hard work again this term! Have an 'Eggcellent' Easter holidays and we look forward to seeing you back in school on Monday 25th April for an amazing summer term!
