SUMMER 2022 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Greetings Everyone!
I hope you are enjoying your summer and have a chance to spend some time recharging and relaxing with family and friends.
We had a GREAT Spring conference in Columbia in May with our first ever Mock WC Hearing. It was great fun but also LOTS of practical information to help us as we work to manage our WC cases.
Registration is now open for our FALL Conference in beautiful downtown Greenville September 8-9. We have wonderful speakers lined up and are working on a very timely topics in the era of COVID. I wish I could say post-COVID but as we are all aware, we continue to deal with it.
The theme for our Fall conference is “After the Storm….We Are Not in Kansas Anymore!” As you guessed we will be rocking a Wizard of Oz theme. We thought it was appropriate because I think we all feel a little like we’ve been through a tornado and are continuing to clean up in the aftermath. We believe we could all use the wisdom of (a few) Wizards, the courage of the Lion to face the new problems we are now confronted with, the brains the Scarecrow found to noodle our way through the present challenges and to continue with the heart of the Tin Man so that we may continue to nourish and care for those employees we are entrusted with. We also have a few surprises in store, so please join us as we travel our yellow brick road to work through the issues the pandemic has presented us with. We also have some GREAT fun in store to help us recharge. Don’t miss it!!!
I also want to welcome our new members to SCAOHN! We hope you will engage and take full advantage of all of the experience that our association has – we love to network and we will be glad to help you with questions, share information, etc. Chances are someone has dealt with an issue or new policy/procedure you need. Don’t hesitate to reach out – no need to re-invent the wheel if there is help available. You can put up questions through our website or by contacting one of your board members. We are ALL better together!
Also, many thanks to our long-time members of SCAOHN. We greatly appreciate your support through the years and greatly value your contributions. We have plans to show our appreciation with a small token – please make every effort to attend our fall conference so we can honor you!
Please take time to care for yourself! Hope to see you soon!

The winning team members will each have the choice of either a $25 Amazon gift card or $50 off of Fall Conference attendance! Congratulations, to the H team!
When it comes to promoting worker safety, employers have a vested interest. U.S. employers spend more than $1 billion a week on workers’ compensation costs for non-fatal injuries. In an effort to reduce these numbers, employers also spend another $1,111 on safety training for each employee on the job site. Despite these high costs, these efforts are still not enough to decrease worker injuries.
Keeping workers safe requires a proactive approach, not only to prevent injuries but also to retrain employees in proper ergonomics. Additionally, reducing the high cost of workplace safety incidents requires an immediate response to injury care that avoids costly ER visits whenever possible.
Heat stress and heat-related illness is one of the most common occupational health problems for workers both indoors and outdoors. Approximately 13.3 million US workers performed work in extreme heat every day in July 2017. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 125 to 175 million people are exposed to excessive heat waves due to climate change. Workers who are affected by hyperthermia include smelter and foundry workers; farmers and ranchers; agricultural workers; loggers; laborers in construction, oil and gas, warehousing; manufacture and textile workers; hazardous material emergency responders and firefighters.
Studies published in the literature support the concept that workers can experience cognitive and behavioral effects while exposed to hot and humid work environments. The significance depends on numerous confounding factors. Human performance is influenced by a range of different environmental factors related to air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed or air circulation along with the duration and frequency of exposure. Other physiological factors include but not limited to, heat acclimation, hydration, rest-work periods, protective equipment use, current health status and physical condition.
